Looking to move to either Orange or Milford. Orange schools might be better but is the bullying worse? I'm hearing a lot of people getting bullied there but not hearing that about milford kids. Comments?

I can't comment on bullying in Amity/Orange. My direct report, a recent grad from SCSU, was a student in Milford schools from an early age. He went to Foran. Both his parents are teachers in the Milford school system. Despite a few issues (the re-district'ing that happened a couple years ago being one), he has almost nothing but good things to say about the schools. I asked about drugs and behavior issues, and he said Foran really doesn't have any out-of-the-ordinary issues. He liked it there. For what it's worth, he was one of the brightest, most disciplined and well mannered employee I've ever had. Also extremely talented for having just graduated.

And just to be clear, Orange schools test better - but I know another family that made the move from Amity to Foran and actually prefer it. Both are great school districts and I wouldn't hesitate to send my kids to either. Test scores aren't everything. YMMV.

Unfortunately there will be bullying in every public and private school. You can't escape it. The only thing you can do is teach your children to deal with it the best they can, and hope school officials take appropriate action when they see it happening.

This is very true. It's a fact of life and a learning experience that's actually probably good for character building, if dealt with correctly. I went to a very small private grade school, and there was even bullying there. My parents taught me to deal with it in a way that I was never bullied again.

Bullying happens anywhere it isn't handled and/or nipped in the bud. This responsibility to end it is on the kid, parent and school. I put them in that order because a kid and parent have to notify the school and not back down until it's squashed. Your child will be fine in either district as long as you are on top of things.

I would not base where you live on bullying. It happens everywhere and has for as long as there have been schools. Buy a home in a town that fits your family best. Jay
