Well, i did notice a marked absence of NY/NJ plates tonight.

Way too complicated for a newbie. These are travel patterns/routes that i've learned from commuting for 15(+) years.

And even now, i'm still "fine-tuning" things.

Placing a tunnel in the bed of Long Island Sound (which is what Nexis specifically says should be built) would disturb delicate fish and aquatic life breeding grounds. Depending on the route, fishing, lobstering and other water related industries will be disturbed as well. This is not scare mongering. It is fact - you cannot build a significant facility like a tunnel, either in or under Long Island Sound without disturbing the environment. Jay

Normally tunnels are not built on the bed of any body of water, they are usually built under it.

For example, whenever you're driving through one of the tunnels in New York City, you are not going through the East River or Hudson River or New York Bay, you are under them.

Why would anyone build a CT-Long Island tunnel that actually passes through Long Island Sound? It doesn't makes sense.

Here is a diagram of the tunnel that connects Britain and France:

They use this type of machine to build the tunnels:

I think a tunnel under Long Island Sound can be built without affecting the plants, sea creatures, and their environment. The ride would be similar to what's experienced in the Chunnel, but much shorter:

That is not true Antonio. Most tunnels are on the floor of the water body they cross. Again, Nexis specifically said a tunnel on the floor of Long Island Sound. The Ted Williams Tunnel in Boston being one of the newer ones. You can bore under it but it is extremely expensive and also has environmental issues. Also it took France and Great Britain more than 150 years to plan and eventually build it at a cost of $15 billion. And that was the cost almost 20 years ago. A tunnel between Long Island and Connecticut could easily cost that or more. I am not sure there is sufficent demand to support such an expensive project. Jay

Long Island and southern Connecticut have some of the worst traffic in the country. A tunnel would not alleviate any congestion on either side of the pond.

Its either this route or the Inland I-84 Route....this route services 5 Million People and is extremely congested while the I-84 Route services 1.5 Million... You can get around the Environmental issues , they have overseas why not here.... This derailment high lights the Need for a Alt NEC one that is faster and less dependant on the neglected Shoreline route.

As for Euro Tunnel taking 150 years that was mainly due to Technology ,and War...it wasn't really a cost problem... The Gotthard Tunnel is almost ready to open that took 15 years to build and is 35 miles long , there are several tunnels either underway or about to break ground that are between 10 and 30 miles long either underwater or through mountains... The Costs seem to vary , but Pre-built tunnels are half the cost of bored tunnels....
