Hi All,

We are considering moving to the Old Greenwich area from the city and were wondering what the community is like? Is it sociable? Are there any Welcome Clubs or suggestions for ways to socialize/be proactive in the community?

Thanks.

Old Greenwich has its own I guess we can refer to it as a mini-downtown with a few shops. That part of town even has its own Metro North station (although the express train to Manhattan leaves from nearby Stamford's station and makes two stops, a quick one on 125th Street in Harlem and the final stop at Grand Central in Midtown.) I've taken the express train many times and hardly anyone gets off (or enters) the train at the Harlem station.

Its a very nice neighborhood, but I can't comment on any local social clubs and the like because I don't live there and never have and while I do have family and acquaintances that live in Greenwich, none of them live in Old Greenwich.

Greenwich is a very large town but much of its economic activity takes place in the Greenwich Avenue area and along the Putnam Road corridor that pretty much spans the entire width of the town from the Port Chester to the Stamford borders.

There are several nice parks in Old Greenwich, including the Greenwich Point Park & Beach, and all are within what definitely appears to be an enjoyable and well shaded walk away. There's also a golf course (I think its a private club, but I'm not sure) in the neighborhood.

The best way to socialize?

Walk around the neighborhood and greet the neighbors that are also walking around. Go to the Old Greenwich "downtown" and get to know many of the people that work in the different shops. With time you will recognize who is a regular at the shops that will become your favorites and that's a good opportunity for extending your network of neighborhood friends/acquaintances.

Also, try to get a copy of the Greenwich Times (the local newspaper,) I think their weekend edition has extra stuff too. That's a good way of identifying the different events not just in Old Greenwich, but in the town as a whole; as well as identifying the different social/sports clubs in town via their advertisements or special reports/articles.

Considering that Old Greenwich borders Stamford (but it feels like a world away,) try to become acquainted with much of what Stamford has to offer too, especially downtown Stamford. You will find that Greenwich is quite a complete town, but whatever you find is missing Stamford will offer it.

Last but not least, as a resident of Greenwich you will now have the option of flying out of the more convenient Westchester County Airport. They have several scheduled flights up and down the eastern seaboard, including various destinations in Florida, and I think as far inland as Chicago, if I'm not mistaken. It surely beats the airports in NYC in terms of convenience, safety, efficiency, etc. The airport is in Westchester County, NY; but its literally on the Greenwich border.

Welcome to Connecticut!

I grew up in OG, it really depends on u. Without offending you, do you consider yourself a yuppie? If so you'll probably fit in with the OG scene. There are more laid back, middle class type neighborhoods on the other side of the post road where you will fit in if ur not into the downtown Old Greenwich scene.
