It's not exactly desirable but that is a very low price point so the options will be limited.
Agreed. They can probably find a house with an first floor bedroom under 300K, but not a ranch. The typical two-family house might work if they want to live in the first-floor apartment, and rent the upstairs.

Torrington isn't the greatest town, but there are places you can walk to a neighborhood food store. There's a couple of decent restaurants and lots of pizza places.

Kent is a stretch, but the OP will definitely not find a home for under $300K that close to downtown Litchfield. The more afforable homes are further away from the town green. I agree with what some other posters are saying about Collinsville being a great choice.

Theres plenty of homes close enough to the green for under 300k, especially currently.

I just am having a really hard time understanding how anyone could consider Collinsville a walkable town in the way the OP expects. It's tiny.

the OP's going to have to compromise on something. i'd say that all the things she wants are available within a few miles of collinsville's center. not super walkable, but bikeable or a short drive. she didn't say she wanted a booming nightlife or a mall, just a food market (there's one right there), and restaurants and a supermarket that aren't too far away. collinsville has all of those things. there's a supermarket in the center of canton, and a few restaurants right in collinsville.

alternatively, torrington has 100% of the things she's looking for. but the area's not as desirable.

It is tiny, but it does have a number of restaurants, boutiques, pubs, as well as a music venue which has some cool shows and a farmer's market in the summer.

Also, there is a very walkable trail (mostly flat) along the Farmington River into Burlington in one direction and into Canton in the other.

I suppose, but the OP shouldn't expect anything to the scale of the other places they're looking

I guess it all depends on what the OP wants/expects.

I was pleasantly surprised last year at the Halloween party in Collinsville. People in the apartments were throwing candy out the windows, all of the historic homes in the very center were decorated beyond what most people do (whole graveyards, interactive coffins, music, tours). There were thousands of people and it was very family oriented, no problems, tons of fun.

It's very friendly. You'll often see the local government reps walking around and visiting the locally owned shops. It may not be as big as W. Hartford, but I was underwhelmed there after all the hype on this forum about how walkable it is.

Anyway, has the OP even been back to the site?

I'd look in Bantam. Not much housing inventory but it's cheaper than Litchfield and there are definitely quite a few places within walking distance of the village center.

I've seen a few sub-$300k properties near the center of Woodbury recently, too, but it'd be a stretch to walk to most of the restaurants in town.
