Many great neighborhoods and a few bad neighborhoods, like many cities. Stick to downtown, East Rock, Wooster Square, or Westville and you will be fine. They are great areas. My personal favorite for families is East Rock.
If you have kids going into school you may want to consider one of the suburbs around New Haven: East Haven, Hamden, North Haven, Orange, Milford, Branford, etc.

Tina - Do not be scared. New Haven is a small city with many wonderful places to live. We would need to get an idea of what you are looking for. Do you want to live in the city, suburbs or country? Are good schools important to you? What is your budget and what do you expect to get for it.
If you want to live in New Haven itself, I would recommend Downtown, East Rock, Wooster Square, Westville and East Shore. Keep in mind though that New Haven schools do not perform well on the state's standardized tests (Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests). There are several magnet and charter schools in the city which offer better options but these schools are run on a lottery system and can be hard to get into.
If you want a suburban town with better schools, I would recommend Milford, Woodbridge, Orange, Bethany, North Haven, Wallingford, Branford, North Branford, Guilford and Madison. These towns range from middle class to upper middle class. It is up to you to decide where you and your family would be most comfortable. I hope this helps. Jay
