Most commuters do not use Amtrak.

I agree, however Amtrak has the trains for commuters. The prices range from 10-15 each way, not bad if you work in Hartford and live in New Haven or one of the suburbs along the line. The schedule is the only limiting factor.

Honestly New Haven and some now argue parts of Middlesex County/southern Hartford county and Litchfield county are part of the NYC metro area BUT many to many New Yorkers actually living within the city Connecticut is like a foreign land - especially past southwestern Fairfield county.

Many New Yorkers are not very familar with Connecticut. They are much more familiar with New Jersey because of its geograpic location which puts its major cities right across from Manhattan (Jersey City, Hoboken, etc). One must drive outside of the 5 boroughs to reach Connecticut.

So basically ...New Haven and other areas around New Haven may be considered part of the NYC metro area but in reality they are very distinct from the city itself.

I've noticed this too - many NYers think CT is the 'land of the rich' where they shall not go. Of course, many of them think Greenwich represents Connecticut as a whole.

The naiveness I've noticed is more prevalent in Brooklyn and Queens than Manhattan and Bronx. This only makes sense, geographically.

I remember in 1998 there was a (for the time) gigantic payoff on Powerball, which was sold in CT but not NY. People from NYC deluged lottery outlets in Greenwich - there were multi-block-long lines to get tickets at some Greenwich convenience stores.

But a few miles up I-95, there were no lines. The NYC ticket buyers didn't penetrate much past the first town in the state. Maybe they thought they would be attacked by wolves in the vast wilderness of the rest of CT!

This is very true and I would make the case that those from the Bronx and Manhattan are just as naive. Growing up in NYC my entire life before moving last year I can honestly say I had never been to Connecticut until a few months and Connecticut was very foreign to me. I know the tri state area is NY, NJ AND Conn, but in my own view I considered PA more relative than Connecticut. I always thought of Connecticut as a place where the rich people stay. That of course is very ignorant because there is no such thing as a rich state. I learned my lesson after visiting a few months ago and doing some research and my long term goal is to one day live in Connecticut. I would love to live in one of the cities (Bridgeport, Bristol, Waterbury, Meriden, New Haven) that you guys look down upon because regardless of the issues those cities have they can't be any worse than our supposedly "affordable" area the Bronx and I can live there for half the price and be within 2 hours of coming home Friday night or Monday morning. I would like to say many are ignorant like I was, but if you read the NYC thread half the people are just stubborn and will live in NYC at any cost. You know what that is a good thing let them learn the hard way and when the middle class finally gets priced out (inevitable) those people can start bidding for my home in Connecticut.
