Bridgeport School District in a heated mess

"Our school district has been failing for many, many years and I am sick and tired of being told as a father of a daughter, `Hey, your daughter can't learn because she is too poor,' " Illingworth told Gomes. "We need change. We need to fix our school system."

Pereira argued that money should not be taken from the district to defend Vallas against a personal lawsuit.
"He is not being sued for doing anything wrong .... we aren't even a party in it," Pereira said.
"He is being sued because he is superintendent," said Mulligan. "To say to somebody, `If you get sued on your own you are going to have to pay your own legal fees' -- no one in their right mind would be interested in the position."

Communities with struggling schools should realize it's mostly the parents of the students that are the problem. Not the system, not the teachers. That's a factor, but not the main one. How about pushing for cultural shifts too.

The current majority on the BOE is only exploiting poverty and uninvolved parents to get their hands on taxpayer money. You have a chairman who reaps state money for the preschools he runs in a building about to be foreclosed on and you have Ilingworth whose only contribution has been to mandate school uniforms - oddly enough his clothing store just converted to a uniform store too.
