Thanks.
The only guaranteed way of getting your child in to Guilford schools would be for you to be a resident of Guilford.

If you believe that advice to be trollish, well, we don't know what to tell you.

Well its the only way to guarantee your child being in Guilford. Even if you wanted to pay tuition to send them there it does not mean they will accept your child. So decide whats more important your husbands commute or going to school in Guilford. Any particular reason you need Guilford schools? In the surrounding area of Fairfield there are plenty of wonderful school districts.

And I am hardly a troll...I've been a regular on this board since 2007 and never been accused of such. Check your facts.

That about sums it up. As already thoroughly explained, Ct. doesn't offer much in the way of choice. That's not trolling, just stating the facts.

I'm confused. Your husband will be working in Fairfield, you'll be living in Milford, and you want your kid to go to school in Guilford? Feel free to explain where I'm misinterpreting it.

As for school choice in CT, this is how it works: You have the choice to:
  • pay for private school
  • homeschool
  • move to a different school district
  • send your child to local school, get involved and do everything you can to make local school a good one….this is what most of us opt for

Hi Joyfulgirl,

Everyone on here is correct. You can not send your children to Guilford schools if you live in Milford. I am assuming you want to live in Milford because it is more to your taste than Fairfield/Trumbull and also because you can get a bigger home.

I have a friend that lives in Milford. I will ask her about the school system and the private schools in the area. Her kids did very well in Milford and they both went to college. Her son is a laywer in fact. Milford schools are not bad, just some schools systems are considered to be better. I don't want you to get the impression that Milford schools are bad beause they are not. And the beaches are great.

I see you asking about the Guilford Schools. Fairfield and Trumbull are on par with that school system and you would not have the commute. Something tells me that you want the beaches and shopping of Milford over Trumbull though and you don't want to move into a small house in Fairfield which is what you could afford with $350,000. I can understand all of that. Everyone has different wants/needs and thier own version of happiness.

"This" to the bolded. The difference is that Guilford and Fairfield won't have the socioeconomic mix that Milford has. But Milford still has a great variety curriculum and extracurricular wise. It won't be as spectacular as the the other two, but it's still quite good.

It's a bit overwhelming. In case people have lost sight of my original post, I asked about a few things, none of them about high schools or test scores. Our daughter is 4 years old, we are not focused on high schools right now and as far as test scores go, high test scores don't necessarily mean the school is good, only that the teachers are most likely stressing test scores over overall experience of the students. No thanks.
What I asked about was decent towns in Fairfield and New Haven counties, commute times from Fairfield, and bungalows in Western CT.
Thanks to all for your responses and input, but can we stay on the topic? Thanks, all.

This was an interesting post, given that you've created a new thread about schools.

You should not be so harsh because I am sure this was the exact reaction most people here had. I know I did.

Now if I understand this correctly you want to live in Milford but send your child to Guilford schools? So that means you want to drive the child a good 20 minutes to Guilford everyday. That seems very extreme to me. It is not worth it in my humble opinion. Guilford schools are good but not worth driving your child that far every day even if you did have open choice. Plus your child will not be meeting kids in the community you live in which to me is as important as the quality of the school. Milford schools are very good. I would suggest that you just send your child to the school you would be districted for there. Like most schools in Connecticut, the differences betwen individual schools in a district is minimal and the quality of education almost the same. Good luck, Jay

I strongly disagree with that assessment. The 2012 10th Grade CAPT scores for Milford are barely above average in 3 out of the 4 disciplines. Perhaps we could say Milford is "good", but certainly not "very good". If Milford were "very good", well than, Shelton would be excellent based on their scores.

The elementary and middle schools are "very good". I would say Foran would deserve that title, test scores be damned - although they are all above average for CT and comparable to Shelton's. Law is more of an average high school by CT standards IMO, and I'd personally think twice about sending my kids there. It's known for its sports though.
