Hamden is not mostly made up of strip shopping centers. Dixwell Avenue is mostly strip shopping centers. That's one street in the entire town.

Hamden has Sleeping Giant State Park, and parts of West Rock "mountain", half of East Rock "mountain", horse trails into Bethany, the Farmington Canal pedestrian scenic trail, two universities - one at each end, bike trails, apple orchards, organic farms belonging to farming cooperatives, some of the prettiest Victorian houses in New England, a few old mansions/estates, and yes - suburbs and apartment complexes.

JayCT obviously doesn't know Hamden that well

By greater diversity, do you mean racial diversity?

I would never pick Hamden over Milford.

That says everything right there. The mall is NOT Milford and Milford schools outperform Hamden's by quite a bit.

I know Hamden very well. You are correct that Hamden does offer these amenities but it still does not change my opinion of the town verses Milford. Milford has multiple parks too and several beaches including Silver Sands State Park. It too has many pretty Victorian homes but also has a number of colonial homes as well. The Milford Green area is a lot more picturesque than what the OP will find in Hamden and clearly the schools in Milford perform better than the schools in Hamden. So to answer your remark, I do know both towns fairly well and I would clearly pick Milford over Hamden. Jay

I guess that's easy enough to research and compare. I am looking for a smaller commmunity feel, which is more of what I'm used to. Honestly, though my highest priority is affordability within reason of a good school system. What I'm seeing from most posters is that Milford may be the best area to provide those two. I'm an army brat so I'm not too worried about the culture shock. Ive been all over the place, to include other countries. My children, however have not. So I wanted to provide them with activities where they could make an easier adjustment to the move. Usually thats through sports and schools. I know if they can continue in their sports as quickly as possible there, it wouldn't be as bad for them. Would appreciate any info in that regard.
That woman is wrong about the schools. Hamden schools do not perform as well as Milford schools on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. In fact, Hamden schools are clearly below the state averages while Milford is generally at or above. You can confirm that on this website. Jay

Well, as a black family coming from Alabama, I don't expect to find the same demographics anyway. Lol. That's not my main concern. Does anyone have any information on the sports scene for this area? After doing much research, I think I will go with Milford. Seems to be the consensus choice among most that I've spoken with.

Sports scene? Do you mean high school sports, or college/pro? In Milford, most people will be Yankees or Mets baseball fans, and Giants or Jets football fans, with the Knicks and Rangers for NBA/NHL being the most popular. Once you get north of New Haven, you'll start getting more & more Red Sox and Patriots fans, as well as Celtics/Bruins. The biggest sports tend to be UConn men and women's basketball, which is often followed with as much passion as people from Alabama follow college football. College football is not huge in this area of the country, though some of the smaller schools have done well in Division 2 and 3 at times, and the annual Yale-Harvard game draws pretty well. (The UConn football team has been embarrassingly atrocious this year...)

Somebody that lives closer to Milford can probably speak more to high school sports in the area than me.

There's nothing wrong with Milford, however, i did note that you said you have children and were looking for a rental in an apartment community. A 2Br. rental in a "community" in Milford isn't practical at $1500, let alone getting a 3Br. for that amount.
