Specifically the southeastern portion, containing towns such as Greenwich Darien? Obviously, with all of it's history and old money, it's elitist, but do people there behave cordially or are they more stuck up?

Actually those towns are in the southwestern part of the state near NYC.

'Elitist' is a term used by some from the 'right wing' to describe wealthy liberals. These towns have been traditionally republican-although in recent years Fairfield county has seen about a 51/49 split in favor of Democratic presidential candidates. Many republicans in CT tend to be liberal on social issues, which in many parts of the nation would make them 'liberal' or Democrats, and not republican. Most republicans in Fairfield county come from the school of conservative fiscal thought, while as I alluded to above liberal on other issues.

Concerning behavior, there is somewhat of an 'air' among many residents; this is especially true in the especially 'super upscale' towns. To be sure there is a great amount of wealth in southwestern CT- and in towns like Greenwich and Darien incredible wealth. One could construe this so called 'air' as 'snobbery'. However in places like Stamford, Fairfield and even Westport folks have a very directed disposition typical of the eastern seaboard. They are usually friendly and socially gregarious.

These towns you mention are 3 to 1 registered Republican to Democrat. The John Kerry votes came primarily from the larger cities (i.e. Norwalk, Danbury)... Either way, I think of elitists can be registered to either party.

My husband and I live in Monroe, but my husband and his family are from New Canaan, Darien, and Greenwich. I do think you will find a somewhat elitest attitude in the wealthier towns, but for the most part, people are friendly. I can think of some stuck up people in those towns, but the ones that come to mind are people with new money, who have moved there really hoping to show off to their family and friends. Forty years ago, most of those towns really weren't as rich as they are now. All that said, despite most of the residents being friendly, I do find them to behave differently from the average Joe.

Several towns in the SW corner of Ct. are actually largely unaffiliated voters. My dh and I are both registered as unaffiliated, but we do tend to vote Democratic. I think a lot of unaffiliated voters do. So I don't really believe that people are elisted entirely along party lines, considering the people we know, but it's an interesting thought. Next time I come across one of those elistist stuck-up snobs my first thought will probably be to wonder what party they are affiliated with. lol

While I couldn't have put what you said better, towns like Greenwich and Darien are very, very republican-minded. That's not to say they aren't "from the school of conservative fiscal thought" but Fairfield County, western New Haven County and parts of Litchfield County are among the most republican areas in New England and the Northeast.

Westport is a blue town, but you are correct when you say it's the large cities which go blue - the smaller towns (in western CT at least) go red by a large margin. Bridgeport, Stamford, Danbury and New Haven - all very blue cities.

Any place you go where the residents have a good amount of money ---tend to have an "aire" about them. I think thats normal and to be expected. They are priviledged...and expect things to go thier way. If you have the funds to expect life on that level ---you'd be able to join right in !!!.and if you don't don't try to...and I think you'll have no problems.

Once you have debuted..and are known...you probably won't feel like your an outsider !

Some rich feel they have a preordained right to money and wealth, and some, and I say 'some' treat those who have been less lucky in life like cretins from under a rock.

I have rich relatives (not in Fairfield county) Who decided to put 1 million dollars into 1 stock. The stock lost over 70% of its value. They sued unsuccessfully saying they where 'mislead' by the companies executives. What comes around goes around in the end.

I'd say it's "blue" in comparison with the other wealthy towns, but actually it's more like 50/50. Then again, what do I know I don't live there.. lol

"Westport is widely known as a liberal town. John Kerry won Westport in the 2004 election. Despite this, there was still a significant amount of support for George W. Bush, as there are more registered Republicans in Westport than registered Democrats." -Wikipedia
