I have multiple vehicles and when I got new plates I think you have to hand them in person. It is really easy, you don't need to pick a number. Basically walk in and tell them you want to return plates and they do it at the first desk you come too. I usually go to the New Britain DMV at 7:30a and wait in line. I'm out of there by 8:08a.

Turn it in, get the receipt, and give the receipt to your local assessor so you don't get charged for taxes on the vehicle.

If you need to return old plates by mail, follow the instructions given in the 2nd section at this DMV webpage very closely

DMV: Returning Connecticut License Plates and Cancelling a Registration

If I had gotten a new car at a dealer and these plates were from my old car, didn't the dealer take care of the registration and I just need to return the plates? (thats what someone at work just told me)

You need to return the plates, get a receipt, and provide the receipt to your town clerk. Otherwise the town will bill you for property tax on the old car. The dealer only took care of registering the new car with new plates. They do nothing re old plates or old registration. FWIW, my daughter just went through this process.

Default Automobile registration (stickers), etc.

How does it work in CT regarding registration stickers, inspection stickers, etc? Coming from NY I had two stickers on my windshield (registration and inspection) each of which had to be renewed every 1-2 years.

Having moved to CT (Trumbull) last year, I currently have 0 stickers on my windshield, is this right?

Correct.
CT no longer has stickers on windshield or plates. You are to keep a copy of registration and emission inspection in car. You will see some older plates with stickers. These were only recently stopped.

I have 3 questions: How do can you find out whether your reported a license plate lost? What happens if your car was repossessed and you never returned the plates to the DMV? Can you be charged taxes for those years that you held onto the plate, or does the plate simply need to be returned?
