Another new tax for Social Justice. I guess we will wait and see. " Pro Worker " but taking more out of your pocket ?

Lamont and others characterized the new law as a boon for the state’s economy, not the burden claimed by opponents.

While there is no business contribution, the state’s largest trade group, the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, and others opposed it, saying it could leave small businesses with an insufficient workforce.

Unlike the state and federal unpaid leave laws, the new state law applies to any employer with even one employee.

“For those who may say this measure is anti-business, the answer to that is it is pro-worker,” Looney said. “I think this is something that we can really justify and celebrate today as a true achievement of the 2019 session.”

Why am I not surprised that it does not apply to unionized employees yet it applies to everyone else, even employees who already receive paid medical leave from their employer. In other words, every one gets subject to a 0.5% payroll tax except for union employees. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I would have been completely okay with paid family/medical leave if we didn't simultaneously raise the minimum wage to $15/hr. We simply cannot afford both.

All of these slow trickles of companies leaving Connecticut over the past decade+, will add up to a huge amount very soon, and probably already has. Has the CT leadership realized this or doing much about it? It seems highly doubtful from what I've read.

It's really sad because CT is such a well-off, gorgeous state, with a mostly high quality of life (for those who aren't struggling to get by...), and gorgeous, quaint towns.

There's a reason CT is losing companies to states in the south and west--lower cost of living, lower taxes, higher quality of life.

CT is losing population too, and eventually, there won't be enough to sustain the pensions and tax base for local cities & towns, and there will be a major crisis in the state.

And for those that stay, it is a game of moving to a less taxed environment. But hey, we now have a family Leave Law. Eventually there may not be any employers to leave for the benefits.

Our leadership is clueless, and also does not care, but I do think you are correct.

Pretty much. Just as in deep-red states, people will endorse anyone will an R after their name, so many people in this state will vote for anyone with a D after theirs. So much for putting love of country above love of party.

It's unfortunate that identity politics and political correctness have replaced economic standings as the most paramount issue in this state, I never thought that would happen here, but it has. At the height of social media in this country, everyone wants to be an activist, except they're not.

Despite all the doom and gloom some here like to think our economy faces, there are companies that are staying and expanding here. This company actually closed their Mexico facility and moved the work here. They just bought a 100,000 square foot facility in East Hartford and are renovating it. Jay

They closed their Mexico facility 4 years ago.

He said it best:

He continued: “Our hope is that policy makers recognize that they need to do less harm to the small and mid-size businesses that drive the success of our state and this industry.”

Good to see the existing Ct workforce of 110 will be retained.
