Here are the updated unemployment rates by state, and it’s not great for Connecticut. Dead last ranking (tied with New Mexico). Any idea why?

I believe things will change when the unemployment benefits come to an end in early September. I surmise that the reason is those states have the longest lasting benefits.

Look at this. Most of the states with medium blue & dark blue with 26 week benefits are the ones with the highest unemployment rates
Economic Climate in CT-usunemployment1.jpg

The party will be over in early September when the extra weekly $300 stops in ALL states.

A-ha......the light bulb just went off. This is why the roads are clogged. Everyone is still not going back to work yet and going on vacation instead in the tr-state area. That is why the roads are so clogged in Fairfield County.

Wish I were surprised. I know businesses not getting applicants that always got them w/o the $300 bonus for doing nothing. Advised them, and they agree, up the road say a year from now, when filling openings choose those who worked all through the pandemic.

And yet there are numerous companies desperately looking for people to hire. It's one of the best times for high school graduates looking to get training to enter construction, trades, and technical service fields. Many employers are providing training and support necessary to get the credentials for required certifications. Many of these jobs are paying $18 per hour or more. The infrastructure, construction and climate change needs will amplify the demand for workers. It's time to get back to work!

For some reason Connecticut’s economy always lags in recovering from economic downturns. It also usually goes into downturns later too. If you look you will see New York and New Jersey are not much better so it’s likely a regional thing related to recovering to the pandemic.

That said, if you look at the Labor Market Information report, you can see that six sectors are down and four sectors are up. Trade, Transportation & Utilities are down 1,400 jobs and Construction & Mining are down 1,000. Financial Activities and Manufacturing are both down 700; Educational & Health Services are down 600; and Information is down 400. It’s a bit strange. Remember these are estimates and subject to change. Jay

Forgot to add, there is some promising news in these new numbers. Unemployment claims for first-time filers in Connecticut were an average of 4,524 per week in June 2021, down 4,822 (-51.6%) from the May 2021 (9,346) level and also lower by 5,922 claims (-56.7%) from the average weekly count of 10,446 in June 2020. That is better than 2020, worse by almost 20% than the 3,823 June 2019 average. Comparisons to last year will always seem great since the economy was locked down in many sectors. Most corps I know, btw, are comparing results (at least in internal reviews) to same period in 2019 for that reason.

If we get better than 2019, that would be very good news.

Like who? most I know did record numbers last year. For every Jet Blue you have 10 major corps that either thrived or BAU

Unemployment rates soared in 2020, and most corps did not have a great year in 2020. They cost cut their way through 2020.
