With a net loss in population it seems the "skilled" workforce is going somewhere else to get a job.

How much has CT's population dropped within the past year? Have they released that data yet? I would be surprised if we gained residents. FFC is growing at a health rate but the rest of the state is lacking. The Hartford area is doing decent...

I would love to see some age data on this workforce. IMO the skilled workforce is retiring and/or being replaced by H1B workers.

Any thoughts on the Aetna-Humana (potential) merger? Reading the courant article it sounds like Aetna will not be moving the Hartford headquarters. They plan on keeping a large number of people in Louisville as well. Cost reductions of $1.25 billion, I bet some of those are lay offs. It will be interesting to see how this plays out because I think CT will loss more jobs than it gains from this merger.

Thoughts?

Will this preclude the CIGNA-AETNA merger talks? That would have been even more disastrous.

No doubt, there would be tons of terminations either way, as it is the only meaningful item when a merger occurs and "cost reductions" are announced. As for location of hq, who knows? If anything, keeping AETNA for Ct no doubt just got more expensive, in terms of the incentive package required.

Analysts have said that the drop was primarily due to baby boomers finally retiring because of the improving economy. Jay.

The Cigna - Aetna merger is off if it was ever real at all. Jay.

I assume you figure Humana does that, since the Times reported they spent last weekend negotiating such a merger.

No matter who merges, the vast majority of the savings will be via layoffs, but the stockholders will experience huge gains. That is the immediate benefit of a merger-you have duplicate staffs, but you just need one.

I read that Aetna torpedoed talks by demanding that their board would be the one with majority voting status. Kind of like a "come at me, bro" moment. Cigna didn't have the backing to attempt a hostile attempt and Aetna took a strong position. I thought it was funny though.
