Connecticut is running a $115 million deficit aka pay out more than take in. Ct has increased borrowing to pay for daily operations and the forecast for next year is a deficit of 1.3 billion. Sure, sounds like you guys are doing great work, here's a raise. If I ran a company those stats above applies I'd be fired in a day. This guy goes to Paris. Lol

It's becoming laughable at this point.

South Carolina is giving all state employees a $800 bonus check because they had a surplus of $400m dollars so they said we'll give everyone who makes under 100k a 800 bonus check. The remaining money will be split up to each county and used for road projects. But that is because they are running a surplus more than they expected.

We have no money so why not spend more money. Pretty soon it'll be the poor and the state workers left in this state.

So cut the pensions. Easy fix. New employees to 401k/defined contribution plans and existing employees only receive a lump sum for current value plus continue to participate in a 401k or equivalent DC plan. No taxpayer guarantees on yearly salary for the next 40 years. Our deficit has nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with our untenable benefits and pensions. Period. full stop.

Yeah, that'll be easy to get through the CT legislature. It's not like they are beholden to public employee unions or anything.

I agree.

But you have to admit it would be nice have a surplus. That $55 would be nice right now.

I fully agree.

That would require a governor with guts. When the Ct union pushed back on 401k last time, a smart gov would have used the 6k layoffs not yet rescinded as a weapon, and given them layoff retractions for union concessions including moving the bottom several tiers to a 401K. Not Malloy; he quickly gave the union everything they desired. He'd make a good union negotiator; perhaps he should officially switch sides?

BTW, no gov, including Malloy and Christie, should EVER blame the economy for deficits. Not accepting accountability like that in the private sector would properly get an employee fired. We are YEARS past the recession ending. State deficits are structural, long term problems, most happen in states treating government employees ling royalty, with HUGE long after they leave, state obligations.

Yep. I have to agree.

I would add that there is massive overtime abuse among municipal and state employees.

We need to solve the real problems.

Sounds like they let go 80 people and are moving the rest to Mass.

Sad to see BMS & Quest close shop. Even though BMS said they are going to keep people in the State, I'm skeptical.

Kind of on the a similar topic but did you know that Jackson Labs is a Non-Profit and in which case doesn't pay taxes, they PILOT!! I was curious about why Florida rejected giving them money and that is why. They give Bar Harbor $61,000/year in PILOT. That doesn't cover a years salary for the Mayor of Farmington. So, if I was a Farmington resident I would have been excited seeing a nice large building going up with medical equipment and the like so "hey, maybe we can get some relief"..NOPE. NON PROFIT.

There in a nutshell is the problem ...if they were so .. as you described them ...highly talented ( whatever that means for a state employee ).... why the need to be "protected " by a union ...?
