You can’t use whole numbers when comparing apples to oranges.

It’s also important to note what CT views as homicides (which is included in city murder rates), Nashville may not - and vice versa. Another apples/oranges comparison.

Norwalk at night would not alarm me, nor would Danbury. Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford, & Waterbury I would avoid at night. I have gone to a few day games at Webster Arena, but never a night game. Did go to 3 baseball games at night, but always with several other people.

However, I would feel safer in Danbury and Norwalk than the rest of our cities mentioned above.

Been out at night in New Haven probably 500 times since moving here in 2010. Other than a handful of panhandlers, we always have a good time. There's so many pedestrians out normally in downtown. East Rock and Upper State Street has zero sketch factor. Seems like an irrational fear to avoid an entire city at night tbh.

Also been to Black Rock many times. No worries.

Bridgeport downtown is another story, it's a bit spooky at night since there's no foot traffic and the whole thing still feels pretty dead. I wouldn't say I felt unsafe, more sad for the state of things. A couple GREAT restaurants didn't make it for long that we used to go to.

Can't speak for Hartford, and I've had no reason to go to Waterbury.

Our beloved trio above had 63 murders in 2020 with under 400k population, and btw, Nashville has 175% the population of New Haven, Bridgeport, and Hartford combined, which means our per capita murder rate in our trio was about 158/100,000 vs 122/100,000 in Nashville. That makes the likelihood of being murdered in NH, Bridgeport, & Hartford about 30% higher than Nashville.

I prefer suburbs, thank you. Especially as I find few things in New Haven I wish to do. Black Rock is pretty, and in the summer during the day, I have gone there a few times, but suburban coastlines are equally nice, and Long Island Sound looks the same in every town.

Nashville has 500 sq miles compared to the trio 60 sq miles. What's the pop and sq miles of the Music City's most notorious hoods? It has them. You're not walking those at night. That would be apples to apples
the need for apples to apples can be argued both ways

It also has great cornbread, and neither square miles nor cornbread mean anything in a per capita objective murder rate analysis.

Regardless, using whole numbers as opposed to per capita when presenting a comparison has zero accuracy. Yesterday, I saw a headline how CA broke the record in COVID illnesses. The media obsessed about how “terrible” the virus was. Well, duh. CA has, by far, the nation’s largest population. Of course they’d have the most COVID cases by number.

The same logic applies here.

Not a fan of great food, museums, performing arts? To each their own.

Why are you locked out of great food, museums, and performing arts living in a coastal suburb? This is Connecticut cities, right? I could accept the argument about NYC.

I’d rather be a mile from the beach and 0.7 from the boat slip. We all have our lifestyle preferences.
