A friend and I are leaving this coming Tuesday the 20th. We plan on leaving at 5 am. Should we even push it back an hour to 4? Anybody who has been to the Cape with any input would be greatly appreciated.

95 is almost always the worst option.

I'd go with 84, no contest.

Probably too late for this, but 691 into Middletown to Rte. 9 South will get you out around Exit 69 on 95. We went up that way last time we were on the Cape and while it might be the same amount of time, the hassle of everything going on in New Haven was just not worth it. I kicked myself for going the NH way home.

at 5 am on a Tuesday, i think either route will be fine...but I would do what Google Maps tells you...coming back maybe a different story.

Ah I see what you mean. Looking over that route, it seems more appealing to me than 84, just for the fact that you have to go so far northeast (east of Worcester) to catch 495 from the Mass turnpike. That's why I'm curious if the traffic is that much worse on 95 than 84 (east of Old Saybrook) to justify that route. Of course, there is probably a lot of activity on the way in Rhode Island and Massachusetts along 95 & 195 that I'm not accounting for. Do you drive route 9 regularly? How is the traffic from Middletown to Old Saybrook?

We drove from West Haven to Barnstable on 95 North, at around 11-12 on SATURDAY July 6th and we barely hit traffic...the only traffic we really got was around the Q bridge...UGH!!!

So I would go 84 or 691....

I avoid 84 at all costs. All I ever hear or see is accidents, traffic, etc. on that road moreso than any other in CT.

I don't do Rte. 9 regularly. When we head to the Cape, we do so during off hours (usually head up there around 5:00 AM like you do; usually leave the Cape around 10:00 when leaving). The traffic during those times at that point on 95 has never been a problem. Coming through New Haven though, the traffic doesn't have to be thick to be insane. Not sure where you are in BF (not that it's a huge town, lol), but it's just as easy to drive up to Prospect and take Summit Rd. to 84 (which only gives you one exit until 691).

I live near Old Saybrook and travel on 9 all the time to and from Glastonbury. Barring an accident, 9 is almost a breeze. It can back up some in Middletown during rush hours but headed North at that time in the morning shouldn't be a problem. As far as the rest - 95 is always a crap shoot. From Saybrook on up to Providence used to be a good ride but now with the bloody casinos it's not a guarantee anymore. If you can get through Hartford on 84 before 6 am, 495 might be a better bet. Time and distance wise, it's all about the same. It's a toss up as to where the accidents and road work will pop up.
