We had a new roof put on our home (shingles removed down to plywood) and found out that we need a permit from the city. Had no idea we needed a permit for a roof replacement, but now we need to find out who was supposed to pull it? We used a roofing/siding contractor who does a lot of work in the area, but he never mentioned anything to us about needing a permit or getting a permit. We're going to go back to the contractor and question it, but would like to hear what others have done in this case.

The roofer should have pulled the permit. You could also have pulled the permit but usually the contractor does. The one pulling the permit has the greater responsibility and liability of making sure the work is done correctly. Roofing requires permits. Pulling a permit would also have generated an inspection from the town to make sure the job was done to code.
