Hi all,
My husband and I just did a major shift from Massachusetts and we got job offers in the NY-CT area.

My future office is going to be in Rye, NY and my husband's office will be in Danbury, CT.

It would be great if someone could tell me where to buy a house. I am looking for a location in Connecticut where the commute to work is no greater than an hour (for both of us). I am looking for something very close to NY, with a good school district and where the property tax and real estate is not outrageously expensive.

It would also be super great if someone could tell me about the availability of trains to Rye and the time it would take to commute from CT to Rye.

Thanks in advance.

Need to know budget.

For those work locations, Ridgefield would work really well.

Thanks for the reply. Our budget is probably $450,000 to 650,000. If we absolutely love the place we could move to $700K, but we would be most comfortable in the 450K to 550K range.

You can get a modest home in Ridgefield for that budget. If you don't mind a longer Rye commute, you could consider New Fairfield - which will be quite a bit cheaper than Ridgefield. It's an easy hop onto 684 from there for Rye.

There are also towns in NY that might be appropriate. Property taxes will be higher though.

Do you also mind telling me about train options and the time it would take from different cities in Fairfield county?

There are few practical options from CT to Rye. You would have to make transfers and it would be a very long train ride in most cases.

There are a couple through trains you could take from South Norwalk, but I'm not sure what the point would be. The towns around there are generally very expensive, further from Danbury, and you wouldn't really save time on a commute. 684 is the best way to commute to Rye.

I think Ridgefield is the clear choice if you don't mind pushing your budget a little depending on how much house you want.

I agree with Stylo - southern Fairfield is going to be tough finding convenience to both Danbury and Rye. Ridgefield and maybe Wilton are probably your best bets, and are both great towns. A problem is going to be the commute home from Rye to anywhere in Fairfield, unless you could take the train (with an easy switch across the platform at Stamford), but that will mean a longer, and potentially traffic-filled drive for your husband. Going across the border to NY will double or triple your taxes, so that's probably out. Might be worth while to rent for a bit, even though in the short term it's more expensive. Would help avoid a costly mistake though. Good luck.
