elementary schools that are good would be lake street, center road, and possibly skinner rd but skinner rd could go either way. maple street and northeast are horrendous. VCMS was bad when I was there back from 94-97, and part has gotten better and part has gotten worse. It has stratified even moreso, where if you're smart and in the good classes you'll be fine, and if you're not then you're pretty screwed. Theres a huge gap now b/t the levels. And RHS follows the same pattern. There is a good range of different types of kids, good/bad, white/black/hispanic/asian, good teachers and bad. Lots of drug use and drinking going on in the parking lots before and after school, as well as smoking on campus in between classes both under the bleachers and on the lower field on the front lawn. If your kid is in AP and Honors classes, they'll be fine, otherwise college-prep or lower and social life and social survival becomes more the goal. If you're looking at vernon, just look next door at tolland if possible. Much better schools.
Vernon schools perform generally around the State average on the Connecticut Mastery Test and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests and have class sizes that are higher than I consider reasonable (above 20 students per class). You can check the performance and profiles of different schools throughout the state on the Connecticut Department of Education's website. Jay
