My wife is a Navy Corpsman and is possibly getting orders for us to move to Groton. She says its nice there but I haven't spent to much time on the east coast. I am currently in school and about to graduate to become a Computer Tech, as well as being a former Corpsman myself. Are there jobs that pay well for techs? We have one dog a Siberian husky who is 1 1/2 old and we currently live in Portsmouth Virginia. I hate it here in Portsmouth!!!!!!!!!!!! This place sucks! my wife and dog hate it as well lol. Portsmouth and all the Hampton roads area is complete ghetto!!! The Traffic here is insane the people drive way to fast and to aggressively. People are rude they stare constantly and then when you confront them and ask why are you staring they get an attitude. Basically over here no one has any manners. Please tell me Groton is better than this. I am looking forward to snow although I actually have never driven in it but that's not an issue ill learn. We just want a nice quite town with friendly people who are not nosy. I basically just want to live my life and feel safe cuz here in Portsmouth that is impossible. There are crimes and shootings daily. I just want to know if its better than here in Portsmouth. I have anxiety issues and living here is making them worse I just need a nice safe quite place for me and my family. also if we lived like 30 or 40 min away from the base would there be a lot of traffic, would it take longer to get there or would it be that amount of time? please help thank you much appreciated.

Groton is definitely quieter than Portsmouth. It is a small to midsized town with little action and pretty mild traffic that is mostly limited to major routes like I-95. The area around Groton consists mostly of small semi-rural towns so you likely will find one that suits your needs. You will not even have to travel that far to find a nice small town near the base. From what my family in that area has experienced the people in these towns are very friendly. Given there are so many people from out of state living in the area, I am sure you will be able to make friends. Good luck, Jay

The oonly problem with the Groton area may be the limited employment options. There are two major casinos near Groton and Pfizer's research facility not far. I am not sure what they would have for jobs. You may be better off living halfway between the base and one of the major employment centers like Hartford or New Haven. Jay

I can't help you with employment opportunities. You'll have to check on the usual methods of finding a job.

You will be just fine in the Groton area. The highways don't have much traffic. Route 12 in Groton, where the sub base is, is very busy but that is due to base traffic. Once away from that road, traffic is no big deal. Groton is located in far southeastern CT and winters are mild. There's not a lot of snow. When's it's snowing inland, it's often just raining on the shore. Roads are quickly cleared of snow.

You will have a hard time renting with a dog the size of a husky. Many apartment complex type or condo rentals usually have a weight limit- little dogs allowed, larger ones not. However, there are single family homes for rent and any number of two family homes which may work for you. Private owners are often more willing to be lenient about large dogs than places with property managers.

You should check on Craigslist- the Eastern CT section, which will give you an idea of what is available with a dog. Go to that section, click on the apts/housing section and check " dogs".

Rents are going to vary, depending on where and what you're renting. You can get out a map, look at the surrounding towns, then check such websites as trulia.com, zillow.com, realor.com, homes.com . They are all have rental sections. Input your parameters and see what you can find by town.

Commuting to the sub base from 30-40 minutes away will be either by highway 1-95 ( very little traffic) or by state roads and back roads. Again, little traffic. It's a laid back area of the state. Life is peaceful.

You may want to do as Jay said and live halfway from another employment center - New Haven, Hartford, or Providence.

You will love Southeastern CT compared to Hampton Roads traffic. You don't sit at a red light every 20 seconds and you won't have to deal with divided highways and U-turns everywhere.

Be sure to eat at Chesters BBQ if you move to Groton. Best BBQ I've ever had in CT, better than a lot of BBQ I've had in the south even.
