We are a gay couple considering moving to CT from St. Louis and need help in picking a community to settle in. I renovate homes to sell and He will be attending UCONN for his Doctorate.

Our main criteria is finding elder day care that provides transportation for my mom whose 92 and has mild Alzheimer's that lives with us. We would prefer a rural, family friendly community, "pun intended" within a half hour or closer to UCONN. A yard for a big Labrador would be nice.

Our housing needs at first would be a decent duplex he could live in and 300k-400k home we both would move into once I'm able to liquidate assets in Missouri.

Thank you in advance for any advice

First off, what campus will your partner be attending for UCONN? Storrs, Stamford, or another one? There are several, in different cities. That will really determine a lot of what is available, pricing, etc.

Storrs is located in a somewhat rural area in eastern Connecticut. It is a beautiful area and you should be able to find a very nice home for $300 to $400k. This would be for a single-family home on an acre lot very close to campus. Check towns like Mansfield, Coventry, Tolland and Willington. Nice small towns. If you need to be closer to a major city, Hartford is 30 to 45 mintues away. Let us know if you have any questions, Jay

I did a quick search for elder care in Mansfield CT and found that the Mansfield Public Library has a page on their website dedicated to senior services. Here is the link:

Mansfield, CT Public Library (http://www.biblio.org/mansfield/Reference/seniors.htm - broken link)

I would imagine that someone at the reference desk at that library could help you with a list of places that would at least give you a start.

As Jay stated, Storrs is in a rural part of CT, so many of the nearby towns fit your description. In addition to those mentioned above, I would add Lebanon and Colchester.

Best of luck and please let us know how else we may help~

If attending UCONN in Mansfield you are lucky to have many options.

Mansfield itself is a great town to live, with new homes starting at under 300K. All of eastern Connecticut has nice homes between 250-350K. New homes on 1 acre or more at 1800 square feet, for around 215-289K.

All of Tolland county and nearby Windham county has homes that are very affordable for the northeast. Mansfield has many services for the elderly.

Northeastern Connecticut is largely rural- that has a significant elderly population.
Daycare for Alzheimer's patients; transpiration etc will be more extensive in towns near greater Hartford, and to a lesser degree Willimantic.

You might also consider the towns of Vernon (with many services), Tolland, Somers, and Willington.

As for the gay scene, Hartford is very active, New Haven is excellent-Providence RI can be considered the best gay city outside of New York and Washington DC along the NE megalopolis. If living in eastern Connecticut you will close to Providence, Hartford and Boston, plus the beaches of CT and Rhode Island, plus great wineries Bed & breakfasts and more.

Default AOL Worst place to retire Claim

<H3>Hi All!

Are there any truths to these recent claims made by AOL as the worst place to retire? Thanks

Dan
Bridgeport, Conn.

Highest Taxes

In retirement, income taxes aren't going to matter much. It's the property taxes that are going to kill you. This year Connecticut ranked as having the highest taxes if you consider state, local and federal contributions. In 2003, Bridgeport, a troubled city with some lovely beachfront neighborhoods, ranked as tops in local taxes: 17.7 percent.

Deficient Nursing Homes

About 17 percent of nursing homes in the U.S. have been found to have a serious deficiency -- something that causes actual harm, impairs the patient's ability to function or puts a patient in jeopardy. In Connecticut, however, that percent is a scary 43 percent.
