Lyme is incredibly beautiful. I would probably live there if I didn't care about needing to work.

I looked up East Lyme on this site, and it lists the average price at 296k. I will have to check out realtor.com tomorrow. East Haven seems to be the cheapest of the places listed. Is East Lyme not near many jobs?

Yes, that's what I've been saying. $ 200,00 is the bottom of the housing market. It will get you a small starter home in some towns. East Haven will offer far more housing choices. However, East Haven schools are not all that good.

The further east you go in CT, the less employment opportunities you will have. Connecticut's major employment areas are Fairfield county, the area around Hartford and third, the area around New Haven.

Is there a particular field of employment you need? That may point you to the best places to look for a house.

the two casinos, Pfizer and Electric Boat are probably the major employers in SE CT, as well as Lawrence & Memorial and Backus hospitals. (Not counting retail establishments like Wal-Mart, Target, Stop & Shop, etc)

You could commute from East Lyme to New Haven, which is a good 45 minutes, or Hartford (60 minutes). Glastonbury, Branford or Middletown are shorter commutes than New Haven or Hartford and have some decent employment opportunities.

That said, in searching on indeed.com for "Accounting Manager" type roles, I'll probably find at least 25 relevant opportunities within 25 miles of Glastonbury or Trumbull for every one within 25 miles of New London.

My husband does electronics work for the federal govt right now. He has a lot of experience, but no degree. I am very flexible if I don't stick around for this PTA program. I have an OLD degree in medical office that I have very slowly been updating, and I have a seasonal work from home job doing data entry right now. I've mainly been a stay at home mom and had helped take care of my parents for quite awhile, so I'm open to what I can get. I did take a pharmacy tech course as well, so that would be an option.

I wouldn't even mind if it were a quick drive to the coast and not right on it. According to this siet, the average home cost in Stonington is over 600,000...ugh, I wish! It seems like many of the coastal towns might be a long commute to some of the even smaller cities. My husband currently drives about 40 min to work now, but if he could cut that down a bit, I'm sure he wouldn't complain! How is the town of Ledyard? Also, is there a working nuclear plant very near Old Lyme. They have always creeped me out a bit...lol!

I'm sorry but I simply have to laugh @ the 'less severe' question/statement. Once winter hits, the cold sets in and the snow starts to fall...sugar...there are no areas less severe than the other. They all are! Born and bred here and the only way you're gonna get 'less severe' weather is if you pack up and move to South Florida for the winter--or be best pals with either Samantha Stevens or Jeannie!

lol! Whenever you think of the New England area, you assume "horrible winters". We have bad winters here as well, and my husband just doesn't want to get worse. It's already in the 20's in the am and we're thrilled to have a heat wave of low 50's for 2 days this coming week. When I asked about how bad the winters were even higher up north, I was told the coastal areas tended to me milder??? I have no idea if that's true or not, but it seemed like the better option. One more question I do have is regarding gang activity. We have had a huge influx of gangs in our area. Recently, at a local crime watch meeting, an gang expert said that NY has become very strict on gang members, so they have dispersed to the surrounding states. Are you guys seeing an increase in gang activity up your way as well??

They're right though. I used to live in the Danbury area and commuted to the coast. The difference in the winter was huge. We'd have inches of snow in Danbury, and rain on the coast. Constantly. Those 5-6 degrees of difference mean a lot when you're in a climate that's usually on the precipice of freezing during the winter days.

That is ridiculous. A Salisbury or Woodstock winter is COMPLETELY different than a coastal winter.
