Hey all,

I may be accepting a position at Pratt & Whitney this summer and have starting looking at housing options. I was wondering if I could get some advice on where to live. I'll try to describe myself as best as possible, so hopefully you can give some educated insight.

I'm 23, finishing an MS in Mat Sci at Michigan Technological University. I've been a competitive cross country skier for most of my life, and I enjoy biking, running, skiing, and other forms of getting outside. I'm looking for a townhouse or lofted apartment with a relatively short commute (within ~20 minutes) to East Hartford, that's clean, quiet, and not a pain to rent from. I'm also wondering what kind of monthly rent is reasonable for a lofted 1-br, or a 2-br.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Hi Nordicskier - Welcome to Connecticut. I think you will like it here. A good two bedroom apartment in the greater Hartford area will run you about $1,300+ per month. Some maybe more, some less depending on the location and quality of the complex. The first town I thought was neighboring Manchester. There are several apartment complexes there which you could consider and it is very convenient to Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford. You may not even have to get onto a highway to get there from some of the complexes. Manchester has the regions largest shopping district, Buckland Hills, with a major shopping mall and just about every major store you would want.

Another town you may want to consider is Middletown. It also has a number of apartments and is home to Wesleyan University. There is a nice downtown area with interesting shops and restaurants and the Westlake section is very convenient to I-91. I think however the commute during rush hour may be slightly more than 20 minutes.

Another popular town in the Hartford area is West Hartford. It has a number of apartments and a great downtown area with a lot of shops and restaurants. The only problem is you would have to commute through downtown Hartford and that is not easy during rush hour. Still some people like the town and feel the commute is worth it. Jay

West Hartford you will love, it has all the ameneties, nightlife, and you are 10 minutes from downtown. You can get something for around 1200.00-1300.00. You can also consider South Windsor or Manchester.
