Snowing in NYC and Long Island and not in CT. LOL. Always fun to see.

So the GFS printed another .40" qpf from Mon Morning to Mon afternoon of rain here. I guess something will redevelop later? Taking a break now.

It is that wave from the south that will move up from the central Appalachians I believe- if you examine the current radar.

Yeah, that moisture over TN/KY is what will give us the rain here tomorrow.

I'm getting light flurries & Graupel here. For those who don't know what graupel is, its snow but not in flakes. Looks like sleet but fluffy like snow. Sticking instantly. 31° here.

3rd time this season seeing snow fall. 1/2", Trace, and TBA tonight.

If you don't end up seeing snow tonight, you'll get another chance Tuesday. NAM says up to 2 inches across CT with some 3-4" amounts.

Temps will not warm up fast overnight so more moisture on the way can still = snow and ice. Don't let your guard down. Active pattern.

From 9 PM Sunday until approximately 9 AM Monday, we will likely have a wintry mix arriving from the southwest. Developing around the New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury areas first, snow and/or sleet will likely develop and then move northeast, overtaking the entire state by around midnight. We anticipate mainly light and moderate sleet or snow at the onset before a transition to more of a sleet/freezing rain precipitation occurs only 1-3 hours later. By the time most of us are awake and beginning our Monday rituals between 6 and 8 AM, temperatures will be going above 32°F everywhere, changing the icing over to sprinkles and mist. Roads will still be slippery and/or slushy in many places, slowing us down.

Just getting back home now and looking at the forecasts.

They have a winter weather advisory up for much of the Tri-State - so NWS must expect some wintery/frozen type precip. I covered my magnolina just it case. Hope we get a quick change to rain. That freezing rain up in northern CT is bad stuff, hope it stays off the coast - lol.

So far no rain or snow in CT...but light snow looks to be falling in NYC area.

NWS just updated discussion. Snowing now in all of the NYC/NJ area and into western CT. Looks like once we get into later tonight the southerly flow will strengthen and temps will start to rise. So hopefully for folks up in northern CT/inland this happens before too much ice builds up. They think by dawn most of Long Island/coastal CT is just seeing rain.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY
647 PM EST SUN DEC 8 2013

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...

SNOW STARTING TO DEVELOP ACROSS WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE REGION
WITH WET BULB COOLING IN THE BOUNDARY LAYER. THIS IS EXPECTED TO
SPREAD EASTWARD ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF THE AREA TONIGHT. THIS
WILL INTENSIFY AND BECOME STEADIER THIS EVENING BEFORE MIXING WITH
AND CHANGING TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN OVERNIGHT AS WARMER TEMPS
ALOFT GENERALLY BETWEEN 750 AND 900 MB MOVES NORTHWARD AHEAD OF
THE SURFACE LOW.

NOW FOR PRECIP AMOUNTS...USED WPC AND SREF WHICH YIELDS AROUND A
HALF INCH...ROUGHLY HALF OF THAT IN THE FORM OF SNOW AND THE REST
A COMBINATION OF ICE AND RAIN. CANNOT RULE ISOLATED HIGHER SNOW
AMOUNTS UP TO 3 INCHES. OVERNIGHT WARMER AIR ALOFT WILL PROBABLY
MOVE FASTER INTO THE AREA AND WILL MAKE FOR A GREATER MIX OF SLEET
AND FREEZING RAIN WITH ENOUGH WARMING ALOFT
.

THE WINDS WILL BE LIGHTER INITIALLY AND THEN PICK UP FROM SOUTH TO
NORTH LATE TONIGHT. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR A MORE WARMTH IN BOUNDARY
LAYER AND MID 30S FOR TEMPS ALONG LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK CITY
ALLOWING FOR PRECIP TO CHANGE TO PLAIN RAIN BEFORE DAWN.
THIS WILL
TAKE 3-6 HOURS LONGER FOR FARTHER INTO THE INTERIOR WHERE FLOW
WILL BE LIGHTER AND BLOCKED BY MORE TERRAIN.

Here comes the Ice...and Rain. Radar filling in and moving in this direction.

The purple line is the Freezing line at 4000 feet which is now around NYC/Long Island. Basically saying it has warmed up at the mid levels which means the snow way up high drops through this layer and melts to liquid....

The problem is that the Surface temps are below freezing across the whole area hence the light freezing rain reports. There will be significant icing south of us. I think we see ice here but light. Heads up if you're travelling overnight. Walkways & decks especially.
