I know most of the colleges won't close. It's finals week and they will at least be open for that. It was not a fun ride in this morning.

Do a lot of teachers really call out sick for a couple inches of snow? Man, people like that would never cut it in the corporate world. You'd certainly be looked at unfavorably in any place I have worked in New England if an inch or two of snow made you call out of work. This is Connecticut, not Georgia!

That would be too bad, I have a colleague who works with me in a school in Danbury (closed today, they actually robocalled me at 4:51AM!) who also works p/t at Quinnipiac (a 1 hour drive through back roads she says) and was supposed to give final exams today. I hope she doesn't have to go, though it is in the evening when hopefully it has wound down and maybe the roads will be clean and not get icy.

Wavehunter, maybe you confused Westport with Bridgeport earlier, I have a friend who teaches at a high school there and she said they are open (one of the few districts in all of FFC to do so)......she said 1/3 of the class is out, everyone feels like the kid who has to "stay after school" and no learning is getting done, so again I agree they just should've closed......while all the delays vs. closings made sense yesterday, I have to say that yesterday with also about 1/3 out and shorter day/periods I had the same phenomena......she also claims they were the only district in all of FFC to not close (actually she now tells me that town of Fairfield didn't close either but she believes they have early dismissal.....she works for the inter-district magnet HS near the Discovery Museum).

I have a 5 minute ride to work, took a half hour. I work at one of these universities and the facilities guys are doing their best but I don't see this turning to rain/slush anytime soon. It may be a slow steady snow but it is accumulating and sticking pretty good to the surfaces.

Freezing line at 4000' is now off the coast. Everyone north of Richmond pretty much all snow. The darker blue line is -5° to -10°C which is crossing Litchfield County is dropping south as well, snow ratios increase, flakes fluffier.

Those snow metars are actual snow OBS reports from climo sites. Cant believe its snowing again south of us.

Most teachers prefer having school as opposed to a snow day as any day canceled is just added on at the end of the year. However, many schools start at 7:30 and the staff needs to be there at 7:15 am. In many cases the town has not plowed the parking lots and sidewalks have not been cleared by homeowners. Children for the high schools and middle schools are often picked up as early as 6:30 am and need to stand in the road if the sidewalks are not cleared. This is a safety hazard for the students and a potential lawsuit for the municipality if a child was to be injured. Unlike many private employers, teachers cannot arrive late at work since they must be in their classrooms before the children arrive. Society has changed and like the private sector many teachers, approximately 50% in many larger districts, commute long distances to their job. When I was a kid neighborhood schools were the norm and most students walked a mile or more to school. The majority of the staff lived in town as did the majority of the people working in the private sector. In many districts as much as 95% of the students are bussed to school as many schools are now much larger and located geographically far from the majority of the student population.

The corporate world analogy is not accurate. As mentioned earlier, many employees go in later or work at home on bad weather days.
