Interesting article I found regarding the lack of 90 degree days in Central Park this June despite warmer than normal nighttime lows:

June 2014 Weather Recap: No 90-Degree Days, But Warmer Than Average

2014 is the first year since 1985 to have no 90-degree days during its first six months. And June joined eighteen others since 1872 with no such days (a typical June has three). But despite this lack of "hot" days, June 2014 was 1.0 degree above average. (Its mean temperature was similar to that of the previous three Junes, which had three to five 90-degree readings.) In fact, it was the warmest of any of the Junes without 90-degree readings. Here are the five warmest:
5 Warmest Junes With No 90s Mean June Temp 2014 72.4 1960 71.8 1917 70.3 1877 70.2 1935 70.1 Source: NY Local Climatological Data
Besides having no 90-degree days, what made this June stand out was that it had only three days with lows in the 50s (the average number is eight). Since 1970 only June 1981 had fewer (two).

What also made June 2014 interesting was the fact that it had an unusually high number of days with daily mean temperatures that were close to average. In a typical month six days have a mean temperature that falls between one degree above and one below average. This June had 13 such days. No other June since 1970 (as far as I went back) has had that many. And only one other month had more, July 1975 with 14.

Additionally, of the days with cooler than average temperatures, the most below average were just -4 degrees (there were three such days), whereas there were above average days of +7 (two), +8 and +11.

So how many 90-degree days might we expect for the rest of the summer? In those years in which the first 90 didn't come until after July 1 they averaged nine 90-degree days, which is about half of the number of an average year. (The average number of days after July 1 is 12.) The most 90-degree days for one of these "late summers" was fifteen in 1911 and fourteen in 1972.

Interesting weather facts.

To someone new to the tropical summers here it's funny that they make such a fuss over whether the highs hit 88 or 90F, when they are both HOT - lol, but I guess they need a way to group weather data.

What is also amazing to me in terms of the June lows, is that the normal HIGHS from where I'm from (Leeds/Bradford) is about 18 C (64 F), which is still cooler than the normal LOWS in the CT/NYC area. It was an amazing feeling to go out on those nights when it was pitch black and still 75 F, I felt like I was in the Caribbean!.

Very interesting (and appreciated) perspective. I have never found UK weather to be unpleasant on my numerous trips there over the years...wonder why it's the topic of such disdain!

People just like round numbers as a perspective or marker, it's just like when the Dow reaches the next 1000 level. If we used Celsius like most of the world we'd probably note 30C (86F) and 40C (104F) instead of 90+, 100+, etc.

What is most interesting to me is how much hotter/more humid can the true tropics be?

I don't know how to find weather data, but I checked the NWS (US Govt.) pages and they have hourly weather data. RIght now in Miami the temp was 86F/dew point 74/RH was 69%/heat index 95 F. Checking the hourly data for the CT/NY area shows temps around 84 - 90 F/dew points 69 - 72 F/RH was 65%/heat index 92 F. We are in the bloody tropics mates!

Actually, it can be quite a bit worse, as it turns out. The all-time high recorded dewpoint on the globe was in the Middle East..a staggering 35 C/95 F:

Heat index doesn't factor in the strength of the sun either, which makes a profound difference. There is freaking no ozone (sarcasm) in Miami and the sun is ridiculously strong. I've been to Disney World in early June a few years back and it put last July in CT to a Brazil/Germany World Cup match shame.

lol. Typical summer weather here today. It was weird not getting this for a while. Hard to work or play in.

Other days we can definitely make the case but currently not the same ... Here's a look at the dewpoints down there vs here.

I don't know how anyone lives in the south.

Feels like 109° in Guantamono Bay. (where the 79°F dewpoint is)
