350k could get you a colonial home in New milford with 4 bedrooms and probably a partially finished basement if you are willing to commute.

$350K will likely get a partially updated raised ranch or cape in the communities mentioned above - maybe an older colonial or contemporary that is livable but very outdated. Newtown will probably have the most options in that price range.

For a cookie cutter style updated (granite etc) 2500-3000 sq ft house with 4 br/2ba in that price range, you would likely need to live somewhere like New Milford, which would not be a great option, commuting-wise.

I don't agree. I was looking at a new construction house in Bethel for about that price. It wasn't huge, but it was 3BR and 2000 square feet.

The house I bought in Milford is 2100 square feet, 3BR, 2 full baths and 2 half baths and it was $350,000 with a nice granite kitchen. Shelton is even less expensive than Milford and Bethel generally.

OP has a family of 6 or 7, including 3 of high school age - a 4 bedroom home would likely be the preferred option.

I think it's important to note that some of the towns suggested above have higher median home values. For instance, Trumbull's in 2011 was $425+k, Monroe's $421+, Bethel's $287+, and New Milford's $234+. The further south and west you go, the more expensive it tends to get among those towns. Shelton's is $354, and Milford's $314.

Look at prices today on zillow. You can't get an updated house in these towns for 350. Sorry and Shelton is not really less expensive than Milford.

It's definitely possible. A 3BR, a 4BR might be challenging unless you go way out to towns like Seymour or New Milford.

Between 300 and 400:

153 Bryan Hill Rd, Milford, CT 06460 is For Sale - Zillow
9 Boothbay St, Milford, CT 06460 is For Sale - Zillow
54 Turnor Ave, Milford, CT 06460 is For Sale - Zillow
37 James St, Milford, CT 06460 is For Sale - Zillow
125 Bayshore Dr, Milford, CT 06460 is For Sale - Zillow
161 Buddington Rd LOT 1, Shelton, CT 06484 is For Sale - Zillow
259 Riverview Ave, Shelton, CT 06484 is For Sale - Zillow
2 Fox Den Rd, Bethel, CT 06801 is For Sale - Zillow
21-23 Granite Dr, Bethel, CT 06801 is For Sale - Zillow
8 Farnam Hl, Bethel, CT 06801 is For Sale - Zillow

Just a couple examples...

For an updated 4BR, I'd recommend Seymour. Might be the best bang for buck. Not a fun commute, but necessary with that budget and needs.
