Even if he can take the train, Milford/Stratford area is just barely going to miss your target for a 1.5 hour commute.

You'd need to take the train to Harlem 125th and then take the subway to south Bronx from there. It would be long, but probably less stressful/unpredictable than driving, finding parking, etc.

The Danbury area is more doable by car, but still not fun. 95/87 in the Bronx is horrendous at rush hour. From Danbury, you could drive to White Plains and take the train from there to 125th and then the subway from there.

Unfortunately your budget is very limiting if you want good schools. The only thing I can think of is maybe doing a townhouse or condo in Norwalk and taking the train from the South Norwalk station. You'll have to compromise on the size of your place, but the schools are decent. High schools struggle a bit but are far from bad.

I did a version of this commute in the mid-80s. At the time, I lived in South Norwalk, took the train to GCT, and took the subway downtown. On good days, the commute was 90 minutes door-to-door. On bad days, it was closer to 2 hours. It was very hard. To make it work, you will have to live a traditional lifestyle where you, as the wife, run all of the household errands, make the house run, and have dinner on the table when he arrives home. That kind of a commute essentially gives him a 12 hour workday.

Would you be better off living in the Hudson Valley and taking a Metro North train down the Hudson to the Bronx? Removing the need for a transfer really takes the guesswork out of the commute, and just makes everything a lot easier. Really.

I agree that it probably makes more sense to live in NY state. you can probably find something in Wappingers Falls or Fishkill at a comparable price/property tax level, and be able to get to the Bronx via train in 90 minutes or less. I think it's an hour and 15 minutes from the New Hamburg station to the Yankee Stadium stop.
