It would be much better to live in Vermont and get huge snowstorms. Then I would be only minutes to good skiing.

Hazardous Weather Outlooks filling in, most updated this afternoon/evening:

HWO: ALBANY NY (NW CT, Western MA, East Central NY, Southern VT)
Quote:
500 PM EST MON DEC 30 2013

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

LOW PRESSURE MOVING SOUTH OF THE REGION THURSDAY COULD BRING
MODERATE TO POTENTIALLY HEAVY SNOWFALL INTO FRIDAY.

BITTER COLD AIR BEHIND THIS STORM MIGHT BRING DANGEROUSLY COLD
WIND CHILLS TO THE REGION OVER THE WEEKEND. WIND CHILL ADVISORIES
OR WIND CHILL WARNINGS MIGHT BE ISSUED AT A LATER DATE.

HWO: MOUNT HOLLY NJ (Delaware, NE MD, New Jersey, Eastern PA)
Quote:
408 PM EST MON DEC 30 2013

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

A WINTRY PRECIPITATION EVENT IS EXPECTED FROM THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY
WITH ACCUMULATING SNOW POSSIBLE.

VERY COLD TEMPERATURES AND LOW WIND CHILLS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN
THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING AND CONTINUE THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT
AND SATURDAY MORNING. THE COMBINATION OF COLD TEMPERATURES AND
BLUSTERY WINDS WILL LEAD TO WIND CHILL VALUES NEAR OR BELOW ZERO
DURING THIS PERIOD.

HWO: NEW YORK NY (Southern CT, NE NJ, Southeast NY state)
Quote:
413 PM EST MON DEC 30 2013

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

LIKELIHOOD IS INCREASING FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF SNOW LATE
WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY. A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SNOW IS
POSSIBLE.

CONTINUE TO MONITOR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTS AS
UNCERTAINTY STILL EXISTS IN EXACT TRACK OF THE LOW PRESSURE AND
PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS.

That reminds me to look for that guys number I hired for $50 to do it. Although this snow will be less than 3 feet and powder type, clearing is always better than nothing I guess. Helps warm the house too when the sun hits the roof instead of reflect back up into space.

Upton says Euro shows banding type snows since its a coastal storm but GFS and Canadian does not. However the GFS and Canadian show enough moisture to drop lots of snow.

ADDING TO THIS POTENTIAL IS THE CLASSIC STRONG CURVED HIGH DEPICTED
BY ALL MODELS IN THE CENTRAL U.S. EXTENDING THROUGH SOUTHEAST
CANADA. ALSO...THE GULF STREAM OFFSHORE THIS TIME OF YEAR WILL
ALWAYS DELIVER ENERGY TO LOWS AND TROUGHS MOVING NEAR SO THE LOW
WILL DEEPEN. AT THIS POINT THOUGH...CONSIDERING THE
UNCERTAINTY...GREATER WEIGHT OF FORECAST WITH WPC AT THIS POINT AS
WELL AS CONTINUITY WITH PREVIOUS FORECAST.

THE ECMWF IS THE WETTEST OF SOLUTIONS WITH POTENTIAL BANDING DUE TO
ITS CURRENT DEPICTED TRACK OF THE LOW. THE GFS AND CMC KEEP BANDING
WELL OFFSHORE
BUT CONVEY PERSISTENT QPF DRIVEN BY FACTORS ALOFT MORE
SO THAN AT THE SURFACE SEEING HOW FAR AWAY THE LOW IS. AGREEMENT
BETWEEN MODELS THAT SNOW IS THE MAIN PTYPE ACROSS THE AREA. THE
DURATION HERE COULD BE EXTENSIVE WITH SNOW WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH
FRIDAY MORNING
. THERE COULD BE BREAKS FROM TIME TO TIME WITH MOST
INTENSE AND STEADY SNOW SHOWN THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING.
AGAIN UNCERTAINTY BETWEEN MODELS SHOWS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EARLY
FRIDAY MORNING FOR ENDING TIME WITH THE CMC TO AS LATE AS FRIDAY
EVENING WITH THE ECMWF

This will be an AWESOME storm for skiing. Super light fluffy powder with temps in the teens during the event. We rarely get that. It's amazing all the cold air doesn't drive the system south

Besides the numerous Lake Affect Snow Warnings/Advisories along the lakes and Winter Weather Advisories around the Chicago area, our first Winter Storm Watch associated with this specific storm has popped up. From the Cleveland area:

Winter Storm Watch: CLEVELAND OH

Quote:
348 PM EST MON DEC 30 2013

.A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA OVERNIGHT. AS THE COLDER
AIR MOVES OVER LAKE ERIE LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL DEVELOP OVER
NORTHEAST OHIO AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA EARLY TUESDAY AND
CONTINUE INTO TUESDAY NIGHT.

WEDNESDAY...LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE OUT OF THE CENTRAL PLAINS
ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY TO PENNSYLVANIA BY THURSDAY. SNOW WILL
DEVELOP ACROSS THE REGION AS THE LOW MOVES THROUGH. SNOWFALL WILL
DEPEND ON THE TRACK OF THE LOW BUT CURRENTLY THE HEAVIEST SNOW IS
EXPECTED ACROSS NORTHERN OHIO AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA WHERE 4
TO 8 INCHES COULD FALL.

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CLEVELAND HAS ISSUED A WINTER
STORM WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING.

* ACCUMULATIONS...4 TO 8 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE.

* TIMING...WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

* WINDS...15 TO 25 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS AT TIMES.

* IMPACTS...TRAVEL WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT COULD POTENTIALLY
BE IMPACTED ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHERN OHIO.

Yea, can't wait! Going skiing up to Mt Snow on Saturday

I don't mean to be a pain, but I'm really surprised some of you are concerned about what MIGHT happen if you can't make it into work during this storm. Assuming you maintain a good attendance record to begin with, I just don't see how one can really be concerned missing work due to 12"+ of snow??

How is that any different than calling in sick if you have the flu or bronchitis??

Anyone company who would terminate (or even discipline) you for either is not someone worth working for in the first place.

Gm guy...who's buying a car in a blizzard? Their so damn money hungry most of these dealers they'll rob you blind so I'm not surpised they'd try to open in a blizzard afraid that they'll lose one car sale to the guy across the street.

I know in healthcare, really regardless of position, people are still required to go to work or to their facility even in extreme weather. I have many family members working in the healthcare field.
