Ridgefield residents tend to go to Katonah to pick up the train. The Danbury line is not a good option. Still, very long either way.

Greenwich does offer some good diversity for the region. Most of the towns with the best regarded schools in Fairfield County are very white with the largest minority group usually Asian. Greenwich High is huge for Connecticut (2,700 students) and has over 25% minority students - over 15% Hispanic, almost 7% Asian and around 4% African-American or Mixed race.

Darien, while a great town, is 93% white with around 3% each for Hispanic and Asian, and less than 1% African-American and Mixed race.

If you're an involved parent who demands/encourages education, you're child will do well in Stamford schools. He/she will exposed to kids aren't as studious, but it won't stop him from getting a good education.

Southwest Connecticut has some of the most expensive real estate in the country. You will pay a lot for a home in a town with good schools that is an easy commute to Manhattan. As others noted, Greenwich is the closest town that meets your description but you will not get much home for your money there.

I would not consider Stamford if you want excellent schools. Stamford is a city and has some urban issues including busing students around the city to meet racial and academic goals. If this is not a problem to you, then you could consider it.

As also noted, you might consider Westchester County, but home prices can be high and the taxes are insane. Other options for you would be Long Island or New Jersey. Note that coming from NJ would likely require a change of trains to cross the Hudson River. This can be difficult. Also Penn Station, where trains to/from Long Island and New Jersey go, can be a nightmare for commuters. The facility is way too small and kind of ugly IMHO. Still there could be more options in your price range in either of these areas. Jay

some of the areas in NJ with highly rated schools also have near Westchester levels of property taxes, too.

Following this thread as well. How long of a commute would that be? Roughly ride to train and the train commute itself? TIA!

Figure 15 to 20 min ride to the Katonah station and another 60 min ride to GCT. Parking is an issue. I believe there is also a shuttle that runs during rush hour.

There is a shuttle, I think from Jesse Lee Church in Ridgefield and probably a couple more stops along the way. Check out the HART bus schedule (Housatonic Area Rapid (Regional?) Transit) -- I'm pretty sure they're the ones who run the shuttle. They operate shuttles from Danbury and New Fairfield too.
