When I think of trolleys, I do not think of Seattle. I think San Francisco or even Boston. Stamford does have plans to do a streetcar (the modern name for trolleys) but there is a long line of cities looking for funding. Jay

There is nothing to see in downtown Danbury unless you really enjoy staring at Brazilian flags.

The OP should consider visiting Stamford too.

The city offers a clean and safe environment with a mix of postmodern, modern, and historic architecture. Also nice shopping offerings, a few cultural centers and art galleries, interesting open events and concerts (especially during the warmer months), and a nice culinary offering.

More info (and source of photos): Stamford Downtown - This is the place!

One of the nice things about the main cities along the shore in Fairfield and New Haven counties is that they are all accessible via Metro-North. You can stay in one and visit the others without the need to drive. It is true that some of these cities are very dangerous (New Haven often finds itself among the top 10 most dangerous cities in the country) while others are very safe (Stamford is almost always ranked among the top safest cities in the country), I think the downtown areas of most of the cities (not sure about Bridgeport) are perfectly safe, especially during the day. Visiting all of the cities (Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, and New Haven) is perfectly doable via Metro-North, and why not add a couple of the quaint towns that are along the way too!

There are no safety concerns visiting New Haven. The dangerous areas are places you'd never want to visit.

Stamford is a nice city, but New Haven has far more in the way of cultural and diverse dining options in my opinion. It also has an interesting history and, as others have stated, Yale University. Safety wouldn't be an issue for anyone with common sense visiting the downtown and Yale areas of the city. New Haven is definitely worth a visit.
