I've been offered a new position in E Hartford (Main Street) and could really use some housing advice. My budget is as little as possible - maybe $1,000 or less, and I have 2 dogs. I've read older posts about specific locations around this area, and wanted to ask if there's any new info available. Single, female, 40's. Thanks!

Look at craigslist hartford, specify E. Hartford, and you will see that you can get a 3 BR townhouse for under a thousand there.

I work not far from your new job if you have any questions on the area. East Hartford isn't unsafe for the most part (it has some rough pockets but nothing too bad), just a blue collar city that has seen better days. Manchester may also get you within your budget. Let us know if you have any specific questions!

I agree with Mel, Manchester would be the best choice. East Hartford is okay but you need to be a bit more careful of neighborhoods there. Stay south of Silver Lane/Brewer Street or north of the railroad line. Jay

There are plenty of nice neighborhoods in East Hartford where a single person with 2 dogs could live comfortably and reasonably. Today there is very little difference between East Hartford, Vernon or Manchester. They all have their good and bad areas. The schools in East Hartford are lower performing due to the fact that they still have a higher number of students that come from outside of East Hartford and misrepresent their residency. Some take CT transit. Manchester's school system continues to face similar challenges due many apartments and rental properties.

The neighborhoods between Silver Lane and Brewer on both sides of Forbes street have many decent homes that are very affordable, particularly the Berkley Estates (streets off of Penney Drive) and the homes around the former Stevens School. Many of the streets off of Forest Street, Hills Street and Oak Street are also very nice and contain well-kept homes that are reasonably priced, quiet and safe.

Are you saying they should turn down a job so they don't have to set foot in East Hartford? That is insane. Have you actually been to East Hartford? The whole city isn't "terrible." It has some nice areas, some rough areas, but nowhere that would be considered dangerous, like the north end of Hartford. I say this as a woman who works and walks around on the mean streets of EH daily.

WHAT??? Do you know ANYTHING about East Hartford? East Hartford is a decent working class town that has a couple of areas that are questionable. By far, most of it is very nice. It is home to a number of major businesses that employee thousands of people. To dismiss it would be wrong. Jay
