Am I the only one who thinks Danbury is far enough distance from Foxwoods and Mohegan not to affect them much? When they were talking about putting a casino in East Hartford that was one thing, but Danbury is 80-90 miles away.

Of course an additional casino would cut into profits! Supply-demand is a basic economy principal that has been backed up by facts.

80-90 miles is not very far, especially when a significant portion of the crowd comes from all over New England and NY- and farther.

The growth of additional casinos across the U.S. has directly caused a decline in revenue.

"When Foxwoods opened in 1992, there were only 10 other casinos in the 12 states comprising the Northeast, all of them in Atlantic City. Today, there are 57 casinos in the Northeast and the number could go to 77 based on those being proposed."

"As a result of the growing competition – particularly from Rhode Island’s Twin River Casino and the slots casinos at Aqueduct and Yonkers Racetracks in New York – Connecticut’s slot revenue is now down 34 percent from its peak, with the state government’s take falling from $430 million to under $300 million today. Connecticut’s casinos are laying off employees and increasingly replacing full-time jobs with part-time jobs to reduce wage costs and eliminate benefits, while Foxwoods, which has already defaulted on a half billion dollars of loans, continues to be deeply in debt."

Connecticut

"We know that we are going to lose thousands of jobs, hundreds of millions [of dollars] in revenue out of the state of Connecticut that are going to go over the border to Springfield. We don't need any further analysis to tell us that," said Butler, who pointed to a study by the tribes last year.

I think if they really want some new revenue they should legalize sports betting. I'd be willing to put $50 down on an NFL game once in a while.

I visited Atlantic City about 15 years ago. The place is a hole except for the actual casinos. I don't know if the highway is still set up this way, but if you approach AC from the west (for example, from Philly, PA). The highway goes over the city (ghetto areas) and dumps you onto Atlantic Ave. There's a big welcome sign saying something like "Welcome to Atlantic City" as you get off the highway.

Futhermore, if you walk down Atlantic Ave the casinos are on the east side of the street (facing the boardwalk and ocean) and on the west side there are pawn shops and strip clubs. This is exactly what Bridgeport will turn into if they build a casino there.

I spent a weekend down in AC last August and since I don't gamble, it's really a $#!tty place to be. I decided one afternoon to take a walk from the hotel down Atlantic Avenue to some strip mall place. I've never been more uncomfortable in my life. Seriously, the minute you walk off the boardwalk it's like you stepped into a 3rd world country.

Good luck, and my condolences for residents that live on/off of 7 between Pittsfield, MA & New Milford if this goes through. What a disaster 7 would be.

It's too close to the upcoming Springfield casino, that's for sure. That one shouldn't be built anyway--there's enough organized crime in Springfield, why attract more?

I really think we have enough casinos. But then, I don't go to them and just don't like them anyway.

Went to both Casinos for the first time. I think I only go to them for the hotels, golf, people watch, and shows.

It's a shame that more casinos have been built in the Northeast because Foxwoods and Mohegan have been so successful that other states want to be greedy in order to compete so they'd be able to steal some of the money. The politicians don't care if there's more than enough casinos. They're only interested in keeping jobs in CT as well as the revenue. The only way is to build one across the border. It's sad that Hartford and Springfield are having a hissy fit about this casino issue when those 2 cities usually work together since they re considered twin cities. Our economy within the Knowledge Corridor relies on one another.

Instead of building a casino why don't we just put a $15 toll on Interstate 91 and other roads leading to MA? that'll make up for revenue loss! *sarcasm*

The whole point of this new casino is so the state will not lose gambling dollars to Springfield and Massachusetts. The MGM in Springfield had projected that 40 percent of their customers would come from the south. That is a lot of people that now likely go to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun. It is interesting to see how the idea of a small slot machine hall has grown to a full sized casino with expanded entertainment and hotel. It might actually be a good idea. It could keep the gambling money in the state and hopefully bring more people to Bradley and the state from other parts of the country. Jay
