I live in Thomaston and have never heard of anyone getting it confused with Thompson. They are at completely opposite ends of the state and are over 90 minutes apart.
Yeah I know but the position my friend got in did confuse them. But he is not a CT resident though and doesn't know all these places. But I guess since he was in the dark and people misunderstood him I would not be surprised that this happened.
Hamden/Hampton
Southington/Stonington
Watertown/Waterford
New Canaan/North Canaan
Hartford/Hartland (I doubt this doesn't happen hardly ever unless its someone who doesn't know CT at all)

I've been sitting here trying to figure out, after your 3rd or 4th negative in the parenthesized statement, does it end up saying what you intended? In fact I believe it does... unfortunately.
Ridgefield/Brookfield in that they both have 'field' in their name and both border Danbury. i always got these 2 confused when i lived down there. couldn't remember which was north and which was south.
I was ready to give this thread a big ????? But then I realized I very often confused Plainfield and Plainville.
I was going to say Plainville and Plainfield too.
I am sorry to hear your friend got confused but this happens in other parts of the country as well. Both Thompson and Thomaston are small towns and I don't think there are many people that are going to either town from out of state. Jay

These aren't pronounced anything alike. Even in your example, I think it's more of a problem hearing an accent.
Honestly we should just be lucky that we aren't in places like PA or states where there are some places with the same name for a town.
Like New Castle, PA, and Newcastle, PA. Or Westchester and West Chester. That's fun.
edit: And those New Castles in PA are 300 miles apart.
One time, I confused Florida and Georgia. I was trying to type Tampa, Georgia .
