Hey Everyone

I was wondering has anyone else that isn't familiar with all the CT towns confused Thomaston and Thompson? They are pretty much pronounced almost the same, so I was wondering that.

Last week my friend was driving up to his families house in Putnam from NYC. He was on I-95 around sunset and traffic got so bad so he decided to get off I-95 in stamford and look for back roads. This was all in the dark. He asked someone on the street if the best way to get to Putnam and they said they didn't know where that town is. Then he asked about Thompson and it seems the person he asked misunderstood him and told him how to get to Thomaston.

He was going up CT-8 coming from somewhere between Shelton and Naugatuck and exited at Thomaston where the person he asked told him to. He then was asking if anyone knew how to get to Putnam since Putnam is the next town from Thompson. No one knew where that was. His family called him and, he told them that he was in Thompson and coming in maximum 10 min.

Then some people he asked in Thomaston said that yes this town is called Thomaston, but my friend didn't listen too carefully to notice the difference in pronunciation, so he thought he was in Thompson. The reason why he wasn't aware though was because it was night time and he always has trouble finding his way in the dark.

He then came to a police and asked how to get to Putnam, and the police gave directions and told him that it is 90-100 min drive from where he was. My friend then asked aren't we in Thompson which is right next to Putnam, and the police said we are in Thomaston but I don't know where you heard that is close to Putnam because its pretty far.

The police thought for about 2 min and said: OHHH Thompson. He told my friend not to get confused because the police said the person he asked earlier most likely misunderstood him and thought my friend ment Thomaston because Thompson was really far and is more of an unknown town then Thomaston is. The person he asked at first might have not even heard of Thompson.

So then he arrived at his friends house an hour late.

So I was wondering have any of you had similar problems with these two towns? Has anyone confused them and had a problem like this before? I am curious to here what other people think about this and if you ever experience something similar.

I live in Thomaston and have never heard of anyone getting it confused with Thompson. They are at completely opposite ends of the state and are over 90 minutes apart.

There are alot of towns, in every state that do have similar spellings/soundings though. It always somewhat lessens confusion when they are not particularly close geographically to one another. Those of us in Ct have prob never experienced the above "issue" before since they are on opposite sides of the state.

There are others in Ct also, such as Killingworth, Killingly etc.

Woodbury/Woodbridge, Bethel/Bethlehem, Watertown/Waterford are some that have confused me a bit, but none so much that I ever went to the wrong town.
