Business Insider published its most expensive cities list. At least one Connecticut city made the list.

1. New York, New York
2. Honolulu, Hawaii
3. San Francisco, California
4. San Jose, California
5. Stamford, Connecticut
6. Washington, District of Columbia
7. Boston, Massachusetts
8. Oakland, California
9. Los Angeles, California
10. San Diego, California

The Most Expensive US Cities To Live In - Business Insider

I guess it's safe to say that Stamford is Connecticut's most desirable city.

Since Stamford is really an extension of New York, this is not surprising. Jay

Eh. Anything West of the Housatonic River along 95 I consider more a part of NY than New England. There really is a big difference in the "feel" of the towns in Southwestern CT than the rest of the state.

What happened to White Plains, New Rochelle, Newark; Jersey City, Port Chester, Elizabeth; Norwalk and any other city in the NY metro area?

I think some people don't want to give credit to Stamford where it is due. To be within the metro area of a major city is not enough to make a particular city among the most desirable in the country.

Had New Haven or Bridgeport or even Hartford been where Stamford is located, I doubt it would had even made the list.

I wonder how DC would fare if more defense cuts happen. Washington is one educated place, the amount of advanced degrees in the region is pretty high. How many of those jobs rely heavily in government I'm not sure.

NY/CT will always be expensive because they're so close together and with Manhattan driving up the costs of everything I don't see how it will ever be cheap to live there.

I think it's good to create jobs and growth but the tax burdens up there are making it unattainable for young folks just starting out.

Another thing to take into consideration is the distance. All of them, except Norwalk, are much closer to NYC. I also forgot a few other cities that are not just within the NYC metro area, but much closer to the city than Stamford, like Mount Vernon and Yonkers.

Those cities are not as uniformly upper middle class as Stamford. They have not so great parts. Stamford has small sections that are less than ideal and a small section that's a bit run down, but lacks significant "bad" areas.

Jersey City certainly has parts that are as expensive (if not more) than Stamford, but also parts that are much poorer. That drives overall COL statistics down.
