We're looking to buy about 20-30 bushes for our yard. How are prices at Home Depot compared to other nurseries? We're in Fairfield...
I know Ganim's can be pricey, but what about Filanowski in Milford/Stratford? Any others worth checking out? Otherwise we'll just go to HD.
I LOVE Robert Treat Farm in Milford. Massive selection and very high quality. Everything I've planted there has thrived, whereas Lowe's/Home Depot is more of a crapshoot. The big box places are definitely the cheapest, but at Robert Treat the price is appropriate for the quality you're getting.
I see A LOT of returns on trees, shrubs, & plants at Home Cheapo. You're better off at Lowes. Prices are similar. What ever you do don't go to Reynolds Farms in Rowayton. They'll soon go out of business then wonder why. Their prices are insane.
You can also check craigslist which I've had success with.
Another idea is... I went to an estate/garage sale and asked if I can have a particular shrub(azalea) on their property. Established and healthy they sold 2 of them to me for $30. I had to dig it up but worth it IMO. It wasn't pot size either. They were pretty big. So that's another idea for you.
The only good thing about the box stores is their 1 year guarantee, not all nurseries offer that.
I really like Van Wilgen's in North Branford. Good prices, great selection and a really knowledgeable staff that helps pickout the right stuff for your yard.
Ganim's is more expensive than HD, but you get what you pay for and their advice is great. First year I did HD, then half the plants died. Now it's all Ganim - talk to Gary or anyone else there, so much better than going the cheap route.
Yes, I find about 70% of the plants I buy at Lowe's/HD survive, and none of them are really rock star thriving plants. The exception being the 30 emerald green arbovitae from Lowe's which have done really well and none of them died.
