I learned the hard way that I-95 South through Fairfield county is a parking lot on Sunday evenings. Does anybody know if the Merritt Parkway is the same?

Not just Fairfield County. Southbound traffic gets bad as far East as Clinton. Traffic is generally less on 15 on Sunday evenings, but still not fun.

what part? Stamford and Greenwich most likely- those two are wall to wall people and cars everywhere nowadays.
I was on it for a 3 exit (19-16) stint back and forth Sunday evening and cruised right through.

Stamford is always jammed.

15 is usually a little better, since there's no truck traffic, but also seems to be kind of accident prone, with less room to move to a shoulder. So it can be really bad.

Best bet is to use a navigation app with traffic re-routing like Waze or Google Maps.

Summer is especially bad on Sunday. Everyone headed back from the cape and other points to NYC. CT is a drive through state. There's not much difference between 15 and 95. You're going to be stuck in traffic. Many moons ago 15 was way better. Not anymore.
