I commute through Derby on Route 34 to New Haven. Traffic has been a nightmare while they work on the Atwater bridge, which carries Route 34 over the river. Yesterday morning, it took me almost 45 minutes to get from the Yale row house to the bridge. Going home, it took about the same amount of time to get from Derby-Milford Rd. to downtown Derby. This is only about a mile or two.

My understanding is this construction will be going on for the next two years. Can anyone confirm? I will have to find another route to work if that is the case. Traffic is such a mess.

This says completion in November 2016, assuming it's the same bridge:
ConnDOT: Rehabilitation of Bridge Number 00947, Route 34 over Naugatuck River and in the Town of Derby

This project was originally supposed to happen 2010-2011, so I wonder what happened there.

Thank you. Ugh. It will be a miserable two years for people commuting through that area.

I see it every morning but I go over the bridge at about 6:10-6:20 and miss the mayhem. Do you live in Derby? I am trying to gage where you need to get to.
There a few ways around depending on where you are going to / coming from.

I don't live in Derby but I travel through. I can take Route 63 but I will have to travel the entire length of New Haven from Westville to downtown. I guess that's better than sitting in gridlock through downtown Derby though!

If you have to go over the bridge down 34 to the boathouse(Gilder I assume?), you could take 15(Merritt, get on SB in Orange on rte34) to rte 8(Exit 52) as the exit (Exit 15) is after the bridge. A little longer....may or may not save you time over sitting in traffic. Also not sure if the traffic is bad once you get over the bridge though.....you may get off the exit right into traffic on 34 past the bridge and that would defeat the purpose.

Without knowing specifics about your route. Look at Hawthorne ave right of route 34. It's about the same area as the boat launch. This road has several roads off it that can lead you through ansonia and derby where you can manage to snake your way around that construction.
