This is something I have always said. The metropolitian hartford area is a great place to live. We have so much so near that just about anyone would be happy to live here. It is an easy city to live in or near. Sure New York of LA are more excitiing but they are enormous and expensive. I use the example of a simple dinner out. In New York you would have to wait an hour or two for a table at even just a decent restaurant. Here in Hartford only the trendiest restaurants have that type of wait. We have arts and theater, great schools and are near the shore, the mountains and rural areas. All in all it is hard to beat. Is it for everyone, no. But for most people it is a pretty good place to live when all things are considered.

The only problem is that now that this is out, Hartford may actually be discovered and get overrun with people. Oh wait, we have strong zoning laws which keep sprawl in check. Maybe it won't be a problem afterall. Jay

Hartford north of I-84 might be worst part of CT then bridgeport/new haven is next

sure, but just about every other metro area in the county has areas that are best avoided.

I recognize those pics from Wikipedia. The house in the second photo is from the corner of Albany and Oakland. I think that house has been torn down since then. You're starting to see that area get cleaned up a bit. The city has been razing boarded-up houses and erecting new buildings (including a new YMCA further down the road). Still, it's a bad area.

It's definitely as bad as those places. Hartford has topped the state for murders in the past couple of years too.

These days, Fair Haven is probably the "best" of the 3. The most crime ridden part of New Haven is Dixwell/Newhallville and a little bleed into the Hill, which is more comparable to the worst parts of Hartford and Bridgeport.
