I will be moving to New Haven in August, and I read that it's required that I register my car in Connecticut within 60 days of moving there.

My car is currently in my dad's name, and he was planning on signing the title over to my name once I move. However, I just paid the 6-month insurance policy on my car. Anyone know if I would be okay if I waited until my policy was up to change the title to my name, get CT insurance, and then register the car in CT? It would be longer than 60 days after I moved there, but would not technically be my car at that time.

I know with CT having car tax, I would still need to pay that on the car while it's there, even if it's not in my name, correct? I just don't want to retroactively be given a penalty for not registering the car within the 60 day time frame, even though it wouldn't be in my name yet.

I've tried to look at the CT DMV site about this, but I can't find anything on the subject. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

You don't need to, and should not, wait for the 6 mo. insurance to run out before registering in CT. Have Dad sign the title, call insurance agent to re-issue insurance with you as owner in new location. and follow the rest of DMV's instructions on registering.

You can either cancel the current policy, and get a refund; or get policy re-issued/re-written as needed, with a credit for unused portion. Call your agent and explain situation.

As far as the Town property tax, they won't know about you and the car until it is registered with DMV.
