Think about why that is, BPT111.

Why do people in the Hartford area think Avon can compete in wealth with lower FFC? Avon is not nearly as affluent as most gold coast towns. It's actually not even as affluent as the northern FFC towns of Newtown and Monroe.

Median HH Income:

Weston $206469
Darien $$181019
New Canaan $163457
Wilton $153179
...
...
Newtown $108,807
Monroe $108,273
...
...
Avon $107447

Households earning 200k or more:

Weston 52%
Darien 46%
New Canaan 45%
Wilton 40%
...
...
...
Avon 20%

I see your point here, but i think you're overlooking the COL factor. $107K is going to go farther in Avon than it would in Trumbull/Monroe/Newtown. I think T/M/N would need to have HHI's of ~$120K to be in the same "league" as Avon.

Depends on how you look at it. If by median home prices, they aren't far off from Avon:

Newtown: $482,500
Monroe: $443,900
Avon: $417,100

This is using census data from 2010, but I think any changes in the past few years would be across the board and similar between the communities.

Well said. Kidyankee apparently does not get the concept of 'relative wealth'.

A dollar goes significantly further (at least in terms of housing) in Hartford County. Yes, salaries are lower...but one's purchasing power is higher.

You can get a brand new home in a nice subdivision of Avon for ~600k. This would easily be a seven figure number in similar FFC towns.

Not in Newtown, or Monroe, which both have a higher household income than Avon.

A simple Zillow or Realtor.com search would prove you wrong.

I think if anything, it's proof that "wealth" and "snootiness" are all relative a few reasons I like northern fairfield county are (1) it's far from being a depressed area, (2) overall the residents/families of the surrounding Danbury towns tend to live pretty comfortably, (3) housing is FAR more affordable than lower county; (4) schools are good. Average household incomes in this area are typically well above state average too -- BUT, and here's the really important part....But, those income figures do not nearly or remotely approach the levels of our co-workers, friends, family, aquaintainces, bosses, etc. who live 25 miles south of us and who we see and interact with every day. Those are the people who I think keep us grounded and in check and balance. Yes, we live comfortably, similar to the affluent Hartford suburbs; But no, we don't actually think of ourselves AS BEING affluent or wealthy -- we personally know who the real wealthy are. Happy middle/comfortable class yes; rich, no. Snootiness isn't really all that common around here either, because I think most of us view ourselves as being a middle class group, at least compared to our rich "neighbors" down the road And I'm not implying snootiness is common around the Hartford area either, but a couple of posts earlier, it was suggested it might be.

I agree. You can get a beautiful home in Newtown for $600k. I really don't think COL between the two areas is that different
