...the idea of putting a 1-cent tax on each teaspoon of sugar in soft drinks[/url]
I drink water, but my husband drinks Pepsi.

There are 224 grams of sugar in a 2-liter bottle of Pepsi, which is approximately 8 servings of 28 grams of sugar each, which is approximately 10 cents per serving extra for the sugar.

So that would raise the cost of a bottle of Pepsi 80 cents, above the already-recently-increased price of $1.98 per 2-liter bottle, on days when neither supermarket near me has it on sale.

Plus 5 cent deposit, plus tax.

I think this is going to drive some people to choose the artifically-sweetened stuff, which is even less healthy than the stuff with sugar in it. Figure one adult who drinks 2 cups of coffee (with sugar) and around 3 of those 2-liter bottles of soda per week PLUS a 24-ounce bottle every other day at lunch time, is going to cost around $5 extra per week, just because of sugar in soft drinks. Multiply that by the number of kids in the family - and you could be looking at $15-25 extra for groceries per week, for people who drink soft-drinks regularly and don't switch to artificially sweetened stuff.

Pennies per serving, sure. But you won't see most households that consume soft drinks drinking only one serving per week, per household. You'll see each person in the household consuming several each week, and in some cases, several each day.

That's expensive.

I will tell you that given the current bunch of do-nothing Congressmen today, I seriously think that we should start thinking of term limits. It is embarrassing the crap going on today. Jay
Also beginning to think this is a good idea. Four terms should be plenty as a Congressional Rep.. No matter your political affiliation, how long until the trappings of the office corrupt you in way or another?

Yes, please! People need to realize that majority of this country's problems from healthcare to transportation is because our congress is so ineffective in getting anything done unless they're pressured by deadlines (sometimes, even missing that)

All in all, our representational democracy needs some kinda tweaking.

Rosa DeLauro is filthy rich and VERY well connected. Not surprisingly, she has been involved in some very questionable activities... I found this interesting video on youtube by truthstream media. Definitely worth watching if you're from Connecticut...

Lol what a bunch of effing morons. and we ask for "more" government....

The government spends BILLIONS of tax dollars every year subsidizing the corn industry in order to keep sugar prices artificially low. billions. This is done because corn starch sugar is used as a sweetener in a gazillion products. So what does the government do in its infinite wisdom? It takes MORE of our tax dollars to make sugar more expensive after it already spent billions trying to make it cheap!

Not stupid they said. Loves the middle class they said. For the people....

My head hurts.

TBF this bill has no chance on the open floor. But for once I agree with you, the Federal Government spends way too much making sure corn farmers are taken care of. I know it's hard work and I do think some people should be protected but this is a bald faced money grab by huge agri-business, NOT small farmers trying to make an honest living. DeLauro is at least trying a, and I don't want to say reach around, but a elastic way around those trenched interests. May not be the brightest idea by a long shot but at least it's getting people to talk.

Did not know that. She has that frumpy dumpy looking socialist "I don't care about money" look down to a tee.

Apparently she is worth $26M. Did she and her husband do it the clean way? No, hubby owns a polling service that is paid for by guess who? The Democratic Party. An incredible phony. But she represents a district that would vote for Fidel Castro if he were on the Democratic line.

As a prior poster said - TERM LIMITS!
