Only the second increase passed:
Rate Hike Approved for CL&P and UI Customers | NBC Connecticut

Since the generation rate of electricity is determined by an auction among suppliers, and CL&P is just passing on the costs, the regulatory board isn't really going to interfere too much. UI actually went up even more.

OTOH, the distribution charges are the ones that are going to get a lot of hearings, since they are decided by CL&P's business alone.

So, if I understand this correctly. The "service rate" is going up but as of right now the Customer Service Charge and Distribution charge have not been increased.

I also read that the average CL&P customer bill will increase $70/month! I feel even worse for UI customers.

Unbelievable. This State is just getting worse and worse.

Not going up $70/month. The average $70/month bill will be $85 now. Still pitiful.

Time to really look at solar if you have CL&P and UI as your distributor. Dealing with constantly changing vendors to keep the lowest rate was such a pain when we lived in East Haven.

Or you could move to Wallingford or parts of North Branford/Northford and use Wallingford Electric;

$18 service charge
Summer
first 700kWh $.1074
over 700kWh $.1136

Winter
first 700kWh $.0944
over 700kWh $.0911

So while the rates may be similar or at least they were, the service charge has always been a flat fee without all the other nonsense on the bills from UI and CL&P. I do feel bad for the rest of the state and would seriously, seriously consider alternatives like solar and LED lighting.

Wallingford also did a much better job of keeping the power on during the storms.

Snowtober and Sandy were both pretty mild in Wallingford---- that played a very significant part in keeping the power on. Wallingford had 4-6" in Snowtober versus 17" in Ridgefield. Wind gusts didn't top 60mph in Wallingford either (and tree cover is sparse--- very industrial/commercial.)

Practically speaking, we had to drive to Wallingford to find an open grocery store. Not Middletown or Meriden.

And it's largely subsidized by the taxpayers, which many who boast about that company fail to realize.
