Hello,

My family is looking at a possible move to the Groton area in the summer. Husband is deciding between a job in Groton and one in NJ. I would prefer CT since we have family there. My main questions are regarding where to live.

We have a 14 year old son who will be starting his Freshman year of High School, so good schools are a top priority. He does well academically and is also very involved in baseball.

Regarding a budget for housing, we are hoping to not spend more than $300,000.

Would like to live within a reasonable commute to Groton for my husband's job.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome to Connecticut.

The better high schools in the area are East Lyme HS, Lyme/Old Lyme Regional HS, Valley Regional HS (students come from Deep River, Essex and Chester), and Stonington HS (Mystic & Pawcatuck). Lyme and Old Lyme are pretty pricey, as are Essex and Chester, but Deep River, East Lyme and parts of the Stonington school areas are affordable. ELHS probably has the most options in terms of class variety, AP classes, sports and extra-curricular activities, and they generally have the best test scores in the region.

Other options could be Wheeler HS in North Stonington (very small, but above average in terms of test scores), Ledyard, and Waterford. East Haddam schools are pretty good, but the town is big area-wise, so you could end up in a remote area with a long commute. Old Saybrook has good schools, but is also pricey. Fitch HS in Groton is okay - they perform around the state average in terms of SAT scores, and nearby Norwich Free Academy is slightly above average.

If you're moving for Pfizer, it seems like a lot of them end up in East Lyme.

I agree with Jeff. Keep in mind though that this area is kind of quiet. Still it is beautiful. Jay
