So as I prepare soon to head to the dreadful DMV (I should renew my DL as well) last time I went I paid cash for my car and when it was time to get the title and stuff signed they said they felt it was worth more then what I paid..

And I know it's going to happen again with this car.. do I tell them that it's going to need a replacement engine? What info are they looking at when they say this?

Had a friend get nailed for something like this. Bought a car from a family friend for a really good price, thousands less than it was worth actually. Went to register at DMV and got slammed for a higher value. It's pretty dumb if you ask me, but so is the whole DMV and car tax/registration process in this state anyways.

Funny when I picked up a car from out of state in NYC they did not question it at all.

It's about $5k less then what it would be selling for.. I've searched around and people said they sent in receipts of the work they had done and they left them alone..

But it's been awhile and I forgot how it goes but in order to get a temp plate you have to have the title right? So the title would have the BOS and that's when the whole "we think the car is worth more then this" comes from.

It's been about 4 years so I can't remember about how all it goes but it sounds about right.

The DMV uses the blue book value. If you have a receipt for recent repairs that may help. In order to get temp tag you will have to pay the sales tax first.

This happened to me before when I bought a motorcycle from out of state.

They'll do the highest value. Either book value or the bill of sale.

Funny, because I bought my last car at a price higher than their book, and wound up paying more. I could've just put whatever on the bill of sale and saved a good $400. Sigh.

I'm sure the last time I went in I used BOS I spent $1100 but they said it was worth more like $1300 or whatever.

Shocking it was fast just returned the plates and got a print out and I was in and out in under 10 min.. Now if I had to wait for my number to be called that would of been something else.
