I'd look at Brooklyn if I were you. You can get a 1 bedroom apt for approx 2k in Brooklyn Heights, park slope, Carroll gardens, cobble hill - all fantastic neighborhoods within 40 min to midtown. They're also safe, beautiful architecture and have tons of restaurants and bars, without being overwhelming like Manhattan can be.

I imagine anywhere in the city would be tremendously overwhelming for someone from out of the country.

Ventrata, you don't need to worry about Connecticut.
It's a lot like Surrey and there are so many British people here, fitting in very nicely.

No way - you can't get a one bd in those areas for much under 3k now, that's why I mentioned Bay Ridge. Even Sunset Park, Clinton Hill, and Ditmas are at least 2,500 for crappy one bedrooms that only post-college kids would double up in. When I moved out of Park Slope a few years ago, small 2 bedrooms were going for $4k a month. We sold our apt and bought a whole house for the same price.

I was also living there a few yrs ago. You won't get anything big, but you can definitely still get a 1 bdrm for ~2k a month, ie...
(From NY Times real estate section)
PARK SLOPE SOUTH
$1,800
182 Prospect Park West
1 Bed | 1 Bath

But if the OPs are not city people, it's a moot point.

Thanks for all the very useful information. We now have more of an idea about areas in CT and NYC and also been looking at places like Tarrytown in Westchester. My wife now has the information needed to negotiate a good relocation package with her company. Once we know the details of that we can plan in more detail.
Many thanks to all who took the time to respond.
