Are utility companies in CT, or moreso rather in the northeast, obligated to disclose household energy consumption by month. If not, would you need special sign off from the homeowner in order for the utility to disclose this information?

Can a 3rd party company interested in home energy consumption on a per house basis gather this information from the utility company - assuming it's public info - or does that 3rd party company need to go directly to the homeowner for permission?

Thanks

Some areas of the country do require energy disclosures for real estate transactions but usually not for single family residences. Some places have ordinances that require landlords to disclose energy costs to tenants, others require energy disclosures for non-residential buildings, but I am not aware of any that make this information available for a single family home. I can't imagine this would be considered "public information" so I seriously doubt (but don't know for sure) you can get detailed information for a specific address if you are not the account holder.

If you just need general data, there is plenty out there where you can get ballpark figures, the US EIA being the best source.

This is not public information in CT and you would have the ask the homeowner to the info.

Also keep in mind that the same home, with different owners, can have very different energy bills depending upon the number of people in residence, thermostat settings, electrical usage, contracts with oil providers, etc.

My question would be why do you want the information? If you are buying or renting the home, you have every right to ask the owner for the information. If they do not want to provide it, then walk away. They likely are hiding something. If you just want to know someone elses energy usage, then you are invading their privacy IMHO. It would really be none of your business. Jay

I think the OP is trying to collect data so he can market alternative electric providers to people.

I never asked the previous homeowner what their electric bill was, but they had a daughter and a tanning bed in the basement. Long story short on the bill you usually see the usage over the last 12 months and it was funny to see how much it dropped when we moved in. I still have yet to break $200 in the dead of summer with the AC and pool running.
