Looking for home owner insurance...
Confused which company is better.
The agent gives very little info...just gave quotes for 4 companies.

Any idea which of these companies is better

Liberty Mutual
Providence Mutual
American strategic Insurance
The Andover Companies

The premium difference is within 160 $ of each other with Providence mutual being cheapest and Andover being most expensive. Liberty comes 2nd expensive (even though giving us car insurance discount) but with lower coverages.

Has anybody has had any first hand experience with any of these companies???

Thanks for suggestions. Need to finalize soon.

If you're a veteran of military service use USAA, they take care of their own.

Never heard of the others beyond Liberty Mutual. They've been pretty good when I've used them. The home insurance quote we got from them was much lower than other major companies like State Farm, Allstate, Travelers & Nationwide. However, it also depends on the agency (not sure why - overhead?) - we went to one in Glastonbury initially of Liberty Mutual, and they gave us the low quote. Then, when we moved to the shoreline, we asked the local Liberty Mutual company here to give us a quote for the new home and it was much higher, so we switched for a while... then, we called the Glastonbury office up again, and got back to closer to where we were before we moved.

But Liberty mutual offers lowest coverage (while all others are better coverage) with almost being highest expensive.

I use PURE, was only slightly more expensive than LM, GEICO, State Farm, and the other big guys. The coverage was a world better though. Whatever you choose, make sure you get an umbrella policy as well.

We use Amica for Home, Auto, and Umbrella. I've never had to put a claim on HO, but have used the auto. Customer service and coverage is great.

Premium is one part of insurance. Claims is another.

I assume (I have no first-hand experience) that among the four insurers you have listed, Liberty Mutual might be the best on claims processing. Even if they don't do the right thing when you file a claim, you can make some noise and shame them into doing the right thing. This is true for any large and better-known companies because they care about their public image.

If you are a Costco member, consider getting a quote for home and auto insurance from Costco Ameriprise. They have competitive premiums and provide excellent coverage. Costco members get (additional) discount on premium; Costco Executive members get additional features for free. To top it all, their customer service is fantastic. (They will candidly tell you what coverage you don't need.)

Is it necessary to have umbrella policy? I had asked the Liberty Mutual duy and he said to qualify for umbrella policy we will have to increase the coverage on auto policy and that would raise my auto insurance by about 350$ besides the cost of umbrella policy.
